[rebel-builders] Ack-450 ELT rattle

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:52 am

Sounds strange Ken. Send it up to Carl at Discount Avionics in Angus. $21.95
I think is his rate now to certify and he'll look it over well before
function test and certificaton.

Can anyone tell me if it is normal for an ACK-450 ELT to have something
loose inside that rattles when gently shaken or just turned upside down?
The rattle is coming from under the circuit board and would require
unsoldering some components to investigate.

Just in case you think I'm totally nuts to ask this - the unit also had
a half inch long bare clipped off component lead that was laying on the
circuit board just waiting to short something out... This is the only
TSO'd part on my plane and it has also been certified (even though it
was new). These ELT's are a joke on so many levels.

I've messed with two of them and they both had the rattle and worked
fine FWIW. Maybe something with the g activator??

[rebel-builders] Ack-450 ELT rattle

Just checked mine and it rattles too. Especialy with a gentle for and aft
motion. I think it's got something to do with the inertia sensor.

[rebel-builders] Ack-450 ELT rattle

Post by Ken » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:52 am

OK thanks Bill, Joel, and Wayne, I won't worry about it then as it does
work and it was just certified. If the thing ever quits, I'll open it up
out of curiosity ;)
