3/4 x .058 for most of my soob mount.
.049 would have been adequate but thicker was easier to weld for an amateur.
R. Finch was probably in the ballpark in his book for a V-8 and from
memory I believe he was recommending 1" x .065.
Generally the larger diameter tubes are needed for long tubes in
compression whereas cross bracing and tension tubes may not need to be
so large.

.035 for my lycoming mount IIRC it's a pain to weld though.

I used 1 X 0.058 for the entire structure. Be advised that I believe this
to be overkill. I decided to accept a bit more weight for simplicity and
peace of mind. I believe that I could impact the ground in a vertical dive
and the plane and engine would be a total loss but the engine mount would
survive undamaged.

P.S. Major milestone. I moved the fuselage out of the shop, put it on its
gear, and towed it to the airport on its own gear with no problems. You can
follow my progress during assembly and taxi testing at
http://mikesr.dcsol.com if you want. I keep adding pics as I progress.
