[rebel-builders] SR Oil Cooler for IO-540

Al, I've always had my oil cooler on the rear baffle of my 0320, and my oil
temps have never been a problem, even in the heat of the summer. It's just
been my CHTs, which now are OK as well after opening my inlets. Except in
the middle of the summer, I have most of cooler blocked off. So I obviously
have way more cooling there than I need. Not sure what make it is, got it at
a local boneyard when building.

If a rear baffle mounting gives better oil cooling, you might want to try
relocate yours there first, before adding a second one.

My summer oil temps on floats are still higher than I want, so I am going to

add a second oil cooler. The plan is to mount it on the back of the rear
baffle. Has anyone mounted a cooler there and if so what make, model and
size cooler did you use? Do your cylinder temperatures run hotter on the
side with the cooler? Also a good source for purchase.
Thanks,
Al

[rebel-builders] SR Oil Cooler for IO-540

Hi Walter,
That was my original plan when I was building but the cooler is an inch or
so wider than the baffle and did not fit the space. I draw the air for the
existing cooler from a 3" scat tube from the back baffle but still need more
cooling. On wheels the existing setup works ok but not on floats oil temps
are always high on summer days. The CHT's run 365 to 385, and 405 in a 5
minute climb.

I am not sure by what you mean by wider. In my case, I mounted the long side of my cooler vertically on the baffle, so there was plenty of width room. The bottom part of it was well down to the bottom part of the cylinder, but still more room there, too. I did mine on the right side of the engine, which is the cooler intake side of the cylinder. The tightest part for me was the oil stick but managed to work around that, too.

Also, if you are just using a 3 inch scat, that could be your problem, too. I've heard of a few cases where going to a 4 inch scat really helped. I think someone on this list did that, too.

Just wondered how the float angles, and step position compared to
the MAM amphibs.

I understand also that FLs will accumulate water in the bladders,
so hopefully that isn't happening yet with your new ones, and
affecting your weighing.

they are much heavier than the 1800s had on my cub.

I have a 4" scat on my oil cooler located on the left rear baffle and have no problems with oil temps. (0320). I tape it off in the winter but do need to leave it open in the summer. My problems with the fiber class cowl is CHT temps. I have not enlarged my inlets like Walter.

This summer, Walter, you will have to slow down your climb or you will lose me in the Canadian air space as you point skyward. Good thing I have skylights to find you!

Thanks, good idea to increase to 4". I can find scat tube but still looking
for flanges, as a last resort I can always make flanges with tabs.

Al,
Can you find 4" scat tube and flanges and uprate the flow to the cooler?
If the cooler is large enough my guess is that you are not putting enough
air through it. The 4" tube will flow about 78% more air.

I found 4" flanges at the local lumber yard. They are aluminum round vents
with screen, I cut the screen out and drilled mounting holes in the rim of
the flange. They also have aluminum flex tubing it looks like it could
substitute for scat tube. The aluminum tube is heavy walled dryer vent. They
also have aluminum dryer vent tubing that is a foil with spiral wire on the
inside. I'm thinking the heavy stuff, does anyone see a reason not to try
this stuff?

Hi Al That sounds like air vent for a gas dryer it should work well enough
to find out if a 4" opening works but I expect it will tend to crack from
vibration after a while.
