[rebel-builders] Rebel - wing strut fairings

Yep....I noticed that tonight as well Bob. Like old clothes if you keep them
around long enough they will come back into style! I still prefer the looks
of the alum wraps and not sure why you have problems with yours Bob... but
mine and Howard's still look as new after 10 + years.

If someone wants to buy a set......or two...or three of these fiberglass
ones...make me an offer !! Heck I even have at least one set that is already
fitted and ready to install! ;O)

I also have acquired one of the double bulb leading edge landing light kits
if anyone is interested in that.

Hi All !!

Mike Basic just told me about a new addition to the Murphy
Accessories section on the Murphy web site .....

The old, original fiberglass strut fairings are now available
again !! These things are GREAT !!! They make a nice, aerodynamic
fillet to the wing & fuselage, and are very sturdy !!!

They do need trimming, to remove the lip around the bases,
and maybe a bit of silicone to give a tight seal, but they will
definitely work better & last longer than the simple aluminum
wraps we have been using (and replacing often !). They bolt on,
and are easy to remove - or slide down for inspection.

They are only $258.75 Canadian / $225 USD for a set of 4.
Beats trying to make your own ! :-)

Hi Wayne !

Maybe yours were thicker or narrower than mine ... My inboard
strut fairings get beaten to death by the propwash - they crack at the
trailing edge, around the fasteners ! Have replaced them at least twice.

Hmmmmmmmm .... fiberglass fairings, fitted & ready to install ...
hmmmmmm.... time for an offline talk ! ;-)

Well I hope they're better quality than the ones that came with my kit. I'm
a cheap scottsman that saves and uses everything but those fairings went
out with the trash long ago.

Guys:

The Elite instruction basically tell you to wrap a bit of aluminum round
the strut, and leave the rest to my imagination. Here's what I came up
with:

1) make a channel section out of 0.020 material which fits under the nut
end of all 8 strut attach bolts. It is kind of like a U in cross
section, with the legs of the U bent outwards to form flanges about 5/8"
above the surface of the strut. It runs along the length of the strut,
and is long enough to cover all 8 bolts. On the outward bent flanges,
mount 4 Tinnerman clip nuts (#6).

2) wrap a piece of aliminum around the strut and this channel. This
aluminum is held together at the trailing edge by 5 #6 SS bolts and
nuts. At the outboard ends, these fairings are trimmed to fit the
fueslage or wing. At the inboard ends, they extend 3/4" beyond the
fairing.

3) attach a piece of 032 material to the part of the fairing that rubs
against the heads of the strut bolts (to take any wear)

4) make up small tapered fairings from fiberglass to cover the gap on
the nut side of the strut attach bolts to bridge the gap between the
aluminum fairing and the strut. Secure these to the aluminum fairing
with rivets, and to the strut with a single #6 shett metal screw. The
gap on the head side of the bolts is only about 3/16", and does not
require bridging.

The result is neat and very secure.

Al

Yup the ones that I got back in 1992 weren't worth much. Lots of
filling, sanding, patching cracks, and fitting to get them half way
useable! And then the pinholes that appeared when painting... I can see
why they dropped them in favour of metal ones back then.

Hank, Bob Patterson just left with the fitted set. (GREAT see'in you again
Bob!). I just shipped out the second set to Jeffery Steenson this morning
and that leaves one set from when MAM's glass work wasn't the greatest. I am
waiting for a gentleman to tell me if he wants that set and if not you are
next in line.

The landing light mounting kit is also already gone.... to PA !

Cheers,
Wayne
