[rebel-builders] Drain Holes

Hi Alvin
I put a 1/8" hole ahead of every bulkhead to drain condensation and any
rain accumulation. Cesna's collect water so I suspect these will too.
I've also heard that there are a few inspectors around these parts that
insist on them. Never seen it done but one could always glue plastic
seaplane vents (as used on fabric flaperons) on the exterior if you were
worried about extensive operation in saltwater. Or maybe stick a drill
bit in the hole and bend the skin rearward a bit to make a mini scoop...

Thanks in advance to any 0ne who can help.

[rebel-builders] Drain Holes

The planes I fly at work have many drain holes that are done that way (just
a hole that had a drill bit or something stuck in it and bent toward the
tail). There are also other clever little drains made from machined aluminum
scattered around, but I don't know where you could get them. If they still
let me carry my Leatherman through security I could get some off.
Ken,
Did you put drains in the wings too, or just the belly? I was thinking water
could get trapped against the outboard side of the tank rib, between the
stringers. In the leading edge and at the rear spar it should be able to run
down to the root and out.

Nope - it never occurred to me that water could sit in the wing trapped
by the stringers...
Haven't heard that one come up here before even though drain holes in
the stringers for letting fuel through has been mentioned a few times.
Too late as it is painted (unless the inspector balks). Oh well - I
think the top is well sealed and I did spray corrosion-X into the wings
last week.

Jessie & Ken thanks for information on drain holes.
I will use a 1/8 bit & bend metal as you suggest,a clever little trick to
create a scoop.

Have my full lotus floats installed Inspection scheduled for May 6th.Hope
everything is ok.

OK thanks Bob.
It's already got 25,000 holes in it, so what's a few more right?

Good point, Jesse ! The answer is YES !! :-)

I was on wheels when I drilled the first set - so they
were in front of the bulkheads .... later, a second set
of holes was needed behind, for floats....

It's amazing how much gets into the fuselage - my original
effort was triggered by finding about 25 lb of ice in the
aft fuselage !!! The snow blew in through gaps, melted,
& re-froze - could have been deadly !! Still warrants
careful checking, even with the holes, if ice is possible ....

Ditto to what Jim said. I had mine all labelled up For "rescue" pull
pin.... instead of Emergency... and was asked to change it because
someone may not undertand what rescue meant! $*(#$@(&&$$##
I'd go with Steve's suggestion... for emergency extraction rip door off !

If you follow the manual there isn't (or at least wasn't) any mention of
drain holes... but it is in Chapter 549. Good idea on the uphill side of
each bulkhead. Also should be some on the rear lower skin of the
wings/stab and anywhere else that you can't claim it will drain itself.

What control travel are you referring to?

#4 sure glad we imported Bob's Elite with TC instead of MDRA ! ;O)

Hi John - again with number 2, we put a little bend in the top of the
door hinge pin and then put a small sign that says "In Case of
Emergency pull pin". Some guys then put the tab inside (between the
door post and the door)
after the inspection so that someone at the local airport doesn't
decide to
pull the pin in order to borrow your GPS or anything else of value!

Cheers
