I know there was a picture of an M-14 SR on the Murphy homepage a couple months back.. The link was taken off for some reason, but I still have the page bookmarked..

Hello Allister,

I saw that plane on the "Photo of the week" on Murphy's web site. I heard that plane already flown but I'm not sure about this.

I understand that there is one up at Arlington Washington US. And I have a
friend who is going to here in Reno Nevada US, however it will be a long
time before he is ready.
I am no expert, having flown and maintained a Wilga for a short time (100
flight hours) I sure like the air start system. No starter motors, smaller
battries etc.
I don't know what altitudes you are working at? Here in Reno we start at
5000ft and go up from there. I would only look at the 360hp if you are
working at those heights. otherwise the 260 like in the wilga should be
fine. I wish they made a 200hp model then I would put one on the Elite that
I am building.
Doug :)

Allister,

I recently sold and shipped a throttle quadrant to Captain Warren Montgomery, in the United Arab Emirates. He is planning to install a M14P on his SR2500 and I believe he is on this list! If not his e-mail is <monty@emirates,net.ae (monty@emirates,net.ae)>

M-14 Super Rebel

Hi Alister !

There is a Super Rebel with an M-14P flying a couple of hundred miles
north of us, on straight (EDO 3000 - i think) floats. The photo WAS on
the Murphy web page, but the owner objected !!! :-(
It IS the 360 Hp model - which is REALLY a bit much for the airplane, as
the Super Rebel is a SKYROCKET with 250 HP !! With 4 large guys aboard,
on a warm day, we climbed out at 1,400 fpm at 100 mph, without even
breaking a sweat !! Up at 8,000 ft, a little over-square, at 22/24,
leaned out, we cruised about 155 mph, on just under 10 gph !! The Lyc.
O-540 guzzled about 18 gph on takeoff & climb !! Don't think I could
afford to feed this bird, but it sure is nice to fly !!!

For someone who's used to flying/feeding a C-185 or C-210, the
Super Rebel is a GREAT replacement !! We had some bush pilots from
Alaska fly it - they RAVED !! Said it was MUCH better than the C-210's
they were flying for work - carried more, and the control feel and
response was MUCH better ! (not hard - I hear the 210 can be a bit of
a pig in the handling dept. ! ;-) )

There were CONSIDERABLE mods required to the airframe, including
narrowing the fuselage about a foot at the front, lots of extra support
tubes & structures, a YAK ring cowl, and a whole bunch of other things
further back !! I can dig out the name & phone number of the engineer
who assisted with the construction - he's a very nice gentleman with over
40 years of experience building & maintaining float planes !! I think he
still has a couple of extra engines for sale ...

Warren has spoken to him, and I believe he will be flying over to
Saudi to help him with his S-R when he gets closer to engine time. He
bought an M-14 from a nearby school, I believe.

Don't tell me you're think about a S-R !! ????

(If so, have I got a deal for you ! :-) :-) )

Bob, Seeing that the two gentlemen that built this SR are quite proud of it,
they probably objected to the fact that even though Murphy was quick to
point out it was the first customer built SR to fly (and used it to
advertise the SR as the "little BEAVER") , Murphy then slapped them in the
face to say this engine wasn't allowed!!!! Why would a Manufacturer bother
to share this beautiful creation with the world, if they won't back the
application! I guess this is exactly why VANS doesn't show pictures of the
Harmon Rocket on their site! The SR with the M14P sure makes one hell of a
float plane though doesn't it!!! and nothing beats the distinctive sound of
a Round Engine! I also remember the Rebel was only allowed a 118 HP O-235 as
maximum power. Those days have LONG gone by, simply because there is a
little bit of "TEXAN" in all of us!!!! Some more than others!

M-14 Super Rebel

Posted: Fri Feb 17, 2012 5:39 pm
by Bob Patterson
Don't know about US $ sales, but around here, O-235 Rebels on wheels
have sold in the $62,000 to 65,000 range, and O-320's a few thousand more ...
(I think the Canadian $ is close to the Australian $ - don't know about
the Kiwi $ :-) - we're about $0.69 US , i think ...)

I know of one O-320 Rebel - Oshkosh award winner- that sold in Wisconsin
for about $55,000 US ..... Have heard of several in USA at lower prices
- don't understand why, unless builders don't realize what they're worth !!???

Hmmmmmm ...... Maybe you could sell a half-share for now ?? You
keep some flying, and the buyer could have the rest in a year or 2 !!

It would be a shame to be without wings ! The quick-build Super Rebel
would shorten the time considerably - and the SR is already easier to
build than the Rebel. (and the spring gear setup is MASSIVE !) While the
M-14 is appealing, I'm not sure it would be worth all the mods ....
The SR is dazzling with just the 250 HP Lyc. - I think <I> would like
one with a 180 HP O-360, with a fixed pitch prop - cheap to run and
simple (but that's just <me> (cheap & simple !) ;-) )

Will dig out the address & email you directly ....

The only thing is I would have to sell my Rebel to finance the whole thing
:-( :-( I have that aircraft the way I want it now, and what would I fly
in the mountains while I was building!! What sort of USDollars would an
0-320 Rebel bring do you think? (1999 NZ reserve grand champion -- no
less!!)

I would be interested in contacting the engineer concerned regarding the
technicalities involved in fitting one of these motors to a SR, so an
address would be much appreciated.

Thanks all for your feed back, it looks like an exciting combination. I have spent 50 or so hours in a Wilga and that 9 cylinder radial sounded just so reassuring! I have also spent a little bit of time in a Yak 52, it was a real rocket ship on takeoff with the 360hp up front, thanks again.
