[rebel-builders] Rebel Fuel Vent Crossover Parts

IF you are already doing the plastic site gauge for fuel gauges...may as
well just use the plastic tees at the top and run a plastic vent line across
the cabin roof at the fwd bulkhead to keep it easy/simple. If I'm using tank
senders I run the vent line from tank to tank with 3/8" alum across the fwd
bulkhead with 90* bends in each wing root fairing area to pick up a 90*
fitting on the top vent fitting on the tank. No reason you couldn't use 5/16
or 1/4" for this purpose either. Remember on at least one side you need a
tee to stick a ram air vent up thru the fairing. U want to be really
safe...put a tee on both sides and two ram airvents in case one gets
plugged.

Terry,
I have worked around the fuel system on my airplane for sometime now until I
can dream up something that will satisfy me, it vary well may be the last
part of my build. For months now I have been looking at various fittings and
can not come up with a good solution to this system with out plastic. I
think the best way is Waynes venting idea and use an alternate fuel level
setup.
So with that said, what other fuel level setups are out there that would
work on this airplane. My wings are sealed so cutting holes in the root may
not be feasible.
Any thoughts,

I was thinking that I would simply put a tee in the upper sight tube port
and come out of the tee straight up with a "J" fitting through the wing root
fairing. Same thing on each side, no cross tube. I have BOTH, LEFT, and
RIGHT options on my fuel selector in case there is a bit of uneven fuel burn
on the BOTH setting. The only drawback is if I am running on one tank and
that vent gets plugged I'll have to be quick on the fuel selector. What are
the odds that the vent on the tank I am running on will get plugged in
flight? And I won't takeoff on anything but BOTH.

In flight virtually none. On the ground by mud dabber wasps and they work
fast. Small screen right on the edges of the ram air intake slows them down
considerably as it removes the ability to stick their ...... into the tube
to fill it's entire perimeter to lay the larve.

Hello Mike:

Yes Mike. I. too was just thinking about the system and what I was going to do
when I get to that point. I had pulled the parts and was looking at the on my
workbench and started to mentally try to put a system together (first mistake).
My wings are complete and riveted with sealed caps, as yours are, it would be a
bugger to install an alternate sensor etc. unless someone has a product or an
idea. From Wayne's comments, it sounds like the plastic is the easiest and
fastest way to go.

I may be missing something but, as an example, the sketch in my Builders Guide
shows an #A1814 at the lower, forward fuel tank outlet, connected via a short
plastic tube (I am guessing here) to the #EB1414 90* elbow (through the cockpit
root). This gives you the start of the lower portion of the sight gage. Here
is where I may be missing something: the #A1814 is a straight barb fitting with
1/8 NPT which fits nicely into the fuel tank wing root outlet. However The
#EB1414 (which is shown mounted through the cockpit root) is an elbow that is
barbed on one end and has a 1/4 NPT thread on the other end. I looked at ACS
catalog and did not see a barbed reducer to attach to the 1/4 NPT of the EB1414
so it would accept the supplied 1/4 inch plastic tube. Is this like your parts?
If I invert the EB1414 Elbow so the 1/4 NPT is pointing "up" in the cockpit,
what the heck would one use to connect the vertical sight gage tubing?? Do I
have an incorrect EB1414? Am I missing something?

I guess at this point, I am going to try and stick with the sketch in the
Builders Guide unless someone has other ideas.

Dual vents would be great.

I am not sure if the SR is similar setup as the Rebel/Elite, but from the
sketch in the MAM Builders Guide, it looks like one would need to replace the
T-14 (Tee) with a #xxx (90 angle elbow) then a short run outboard into the wing
fairing area then put an inverted T-14 (Tee) and somehow connect the T-14 to
the 1/4 OD aluminum tube. It looks like my sketch shows the two pieces are
connected with a short piece of 1/4 clear tubing.

I also have a floor selector valve that has OFF-LEFT-BOTH-RIGHT detents ala
Cessna. I am wondering if it be best to install the two vents in each wing
fairing as you mentioned BUT also run the crossover tubing to connect the left
and right tanks.

Well,
I took all the plastic fittings out of their bags a while back and no longer
can identify, but it looks like I have the same dilema as you. It looks like
I have the straight 1/8 pipe X 1/4 barb to screw into the wing, and a 1/4 X
1/4 plastic barbed for all the the lower as you explain. But the top fitting
needs to be a tee and my has 1/8 pipe on one end which won't adapt to the
plastic coming from the tank at the top hole. O well I'm not using any of
it. I just have to do something different here.................

Terry,
I was tentatively planning to use aluminum lines from the upper and lower
sight tube outlets in the tank across to the cabin with AN 838 hose to
universal bulkhead elbows in the cabin root rib. This would give a neat
installation, and avoid a kink in the sight tube where it would pass through
the root rib. As an alternative, I saw some industrial glass/aluminum sight
gauges used in a Bearhawk that looked slick. Check out
http://www.mcmaster.com/ and look at the liquid level gauges on page 486.

Dual vents would be great.

I am not sure if the SR is similar setup as the Rebel/Elite, but from the
sketch in the MAM Builders Guide, it looks like one would need to replace
the
T-14 (Tee) with a #xxx (90 angle elbow) then a short run outboard into the
wing
fairing area then put an inverted T-14 (Tee) and somehow connect the T-14
to
the 1/4 OD aluminum tube. It looks like my sketch shows the two pieces are
connected with a short piece of 1/4 clear tubing.

I also have a floor selector valve that has OFF-LEFT-BOTH-RIGHT detents ala
Cessna. I am wondering if it be best to install the two vents in each wing
fairing as you mentioned BUT also run the crossover tubing to connect the
left
and right tanks.

Revisiting this topic a little. I plan on using 2 industrial site gauges in
each wing root with a ram vent in each wing fairing. Do you think it is
still necessary to cross vent the tanks?
