[rebel-builders] Rebel/Elite Gascolator Location Revisited

Terry, if it were me, I would wait until I had the engine and exhaust before I finalized those locations, or put any holes through the firewall. There are many variants of engines, carb locations, exhaust, motor mounts, etc, and all that stuff has to fit pretty close together there.

I would wait as well untill you had your engine installed. I would also mount the gascolator low enough on the firewall to be able to reach up and drain it with out turning upside down and reaching up inside the cowling. It should be as low as possible as it is, or should be, at the lowest spot in the gas line, firewall forward.

Hello Walter:

At this point, I am beginning to think you are correct.

The reason that I was trying to locate and mount the gascolator now was that I need to run my last piece of aluminum fuel line from the (between the seats) in-floor selector valve to the gascolator in one run (without putting in a Union) so I could close the inside cockpit floor, mount
the gear and get it off of the work bench. As stated before, it is kind of a "Catch 22". Basically, I need to accomplish the fuel line run from the selector valve to the gascolator before I can close the floor, before I install the landing gear.

I was recalling when I built the Long-EZ. Burt had his plans drawings of the firewall with all associated stuff that gets attached to it. I went by the plans and drilled the holes where measurements were, mounted the accessories (i.e.. the throttle/mixture cables, battery cables, fuel
pump, gascolator, air filter etc.). I didn't even have the engine purchased at the time! Months later, once I had engine purchased, it was a matter of bolting it to the mount, hooking the controls up and making baffling/cowl. Everything fit by using his drawings. I think that Van's
and Glastar call out where stuff should be located on their firewalls (with specific engines). That is why I was convinced that, by now, someone might have some standard dimensions (coordinates) where things mount to the firewall for the popular O320/O360 engine. It seems like the
position of things like location of the starter/alternator, accessory case, throttle, mixture, fuel inlet at the carb etc. for those engines wouldn't change too much (even with the different versions) and folks installing said engine in their Rebel/Elite would somewhat, down-the-road,
have figured out similar, optimum installations of their firewall goodies. Unfortunately, it looks like it is "do your own thing" and I am caught in a "Catch 22".

Thanks for the information on thing fitting close. I think that I will run the fuel line from the selector valve and stop it 4 inches aft of the firewall where a Union will go. I will run the remainder of the fuel line from that point to the gascolator when an engine is purchased.

Thanks again Walter.

Well, good to hear that you are getting some work done on your plane. As
they keep saying here, keep at it, it's all worth it.

And I wouldn't be in too great a rush to rivet that floor either. Remember,
riveting is the easy part, so if that's all you have left near the end, you
will be done very quickly.

Good luck. Felt like summer outside today, but unfortunately have to work...

Hello Group:

For those that have their engine installation completed or flying.

I am building a Rebel with O320 or possibly O360 clone with Aircraft
Exhaust Technologies dual Exhaust and MAM fiberglass cowl. I also plan
to use Van's throttle/mixture plate. I DO NOT have an engine
installed, but need to mount the gascolators now.

Initially, I was thinking of mounting the gascolator 7 or 8 inches to
the left of centerline on the firewall, but noticed in some photos
thatthe dual exhaust pipes come mighty close to that area. My
question is
that, if I elect to mount my Andair Gascolator on the centerline
of the
firewall (with heat shield) to place it between the exhaust pipes
and to
keep it away maximum distance from the exhaust pipes, can I feel
confident that nothing will be required to be mounted in that location
in the future? Will the throttle, mixture cables etc. location clear
enough to the right of centerline and line up properly? Any other
gotchas? Suggestions?
