It is a STUPID U.S. Custom's requirement. I had to supply a business tax-id
for the last item I had shipped to my business address.

Folks,

I just ordered a part from Murphy to be shipped to my fathers in Texas so I
can pick it up while I am over in the States next week. Nancy Puff at Murphy
wanted to know my US Social Security number for the couriers US Customs
form? What gives? I sure don't like giving out this information to just
anyone.

Anyone elso had to do this? Is this a new requirement?

Thanks,
-Jason

I was also asked for my SS number last week I gave it to her but I'm having
second thoughts. I'd be surprised if it was a requirement, but I don't know.

Here's text from www.fedex.com for instance on this requirement (Note:
Though it lists a $2,000 floor, I've seen other sites say that U.S. Customs
is applying the requirement for any $ value):

(g) U.S. Customs regulations require the IRS Employer Identification Number
(EIN) or, if an individual, the Social Security Number (SSN) of the U.S.
recipient for certain packages being shipped into the U.S. The U.S. Customs
regulation applies to import shipments with a declared value for customs of
U.S. $2,000* or more, for shipments containing plastics, toys, games, or
sporting equipment valued at U.S. $250* or more, and for the following
commodities valued at U.S. $5* or more: textile or textile products,
clothing, leather or leather products, footwear and headwear, all FDA
regulated commodities, or other goods that are restricted or controlled
requiring a formal entry by the U.S. Customs service.

Jason,

Nancy isn't "just anyone" . . . she is the "Queen of Shipping"! HAHA!
LOL!

Yup. If you don't have a business tax number, you gotta give 'em
something to prove who "exactly" is receiving the package, and the
Social Security Number is it. I think that all of this started after
September 11. I am not sure if you can give them other forms of proof. I
use the business tax number.

The best part of this is that your SSN will be printed on the label on the
outside of the package... where anybody who looks will get your name,
address, phone number, and SSN! This is what Washington calls Homeland
Security!!!

It sure would be a shame if you "stuttered" when giving her your SSN and
she "accidentally" misunderstood you and wrote down the wrong number.

Actually, on my last shipment from MAM, my SS number was required, but only
appeared on the customs paperwork which was INSIDE the package. No SS#
appeared on any ouside label or marking.

Yes I noticed this too! From now on they will get a non-descript 9 digit
number I pick out of a hat! Of course if the FEDS question me about it, It will
just be a code that I can decipher for them on request.
