[rebel-builders] Server speed

Hmmm, thought I addressed this directly to Wayne. Oh well, I intended to
make a post to everybody anyway. I made a bunch of changes to the network
configuration today because things have slowly been getting slower and
slower as the server is handling more simultaneous connections. So far it
hasn't been an issue of bandwidth, so I was stumped by the slow down. After
some research I discovered that those little $50 broadband modems they sell
for cable and DSL connections just can't handle more than 6-10 connections
at a time without taking serious performance hits. It's not uncommon
recently to have 25-30 connections to the server simultaneously... so I
guess I'm lucky that little router didn't just quit all together!

In an attempt to improve performance I have completely removed the router,
and connected the server directly to the DSL modem. I'm hoping this will
improve the systems performance when there are a lot of folks using the
server at once. I'm still limited by the 320K uplink speed of my DSL, but
that should be adequate most of the time.

Anyway, if anybody can confirm a change in performance... better or worse,
I'd appreciate it if you'd drop me a note.

Thanks, Mike

Hi Wayne, I know you're on a dial-up connection, but I saw you were online
and wanted to ask if you notice any discernable difference in the server
speed. I've been playing with network connections and settings all day
and
am hoping to improve things.

Thanks, Mike

Mike,

BIG difference. I just ran through a bunch of the picture files and
it was a lot like hard disk access. I have cable.

Thanks for all the hard work.

John...

Glad to hear it, I didn't really expect to see a speed up with only a couple
of people online, but apparently there is... so this appears to be a good
move all around.
