Good morning , Ralph! Did you install these after everything got closed up
in the tail? It's munchkin land back there now!

Mine came from MAM. They were originally designed and sold by Keith at
Montana floats but I think only available now from MAM.

[rebel-builders] ground handling handles

Is this really an issue with the Rebel/Elite? I have flown many small
taildraggers with no handles. It seems easy to move the tail around by
pushing gently on the horizontal/vertical stab. I can see for heavier
airplanes like the Moose/SR it would be necessary though.

One comes out each side for double the handling pleasure. I don't know
what MAM is getting for them now, they may be on the web site. (Nancy's
doing a good job uprating it!) Seems like over US$200 some years ago. It
would be possible to add a through tube and a separate removable through
handle but the fuselage area would have to be reinforced to take the load.
I don't want to have any more loose items to contend with. Remember, these
are not just for hangar use but also for those one way in / out runways.
Regards,
Ralph Baker

[rebel-builders] ground handling handles

Hi Jesse !

This is ABSOLUTELY an issue with the Rebel !! And you should
NEVER move an aircraft by pushing on a flying or control surface -
even if you have seen others get away with it !!!!!

I saw an aircraft that landed after practicing spins - someone
pushed on the vertical fin, and it swung free !!! The tube was
cracked completely through, and only the fabric had held it !!!
Seen many examples of potentially fatal airframe damage from poor
ground handling in over 34 years of instructing ! This is one of
my really big 'pet peeves' !!

I know lots of people do this - that does not make it smart !

The Rebel tail section is plenty strong enough for air loads,
but was never intended for ground handling - if you are going to
push it around much, get those handles ! Or at least push on the
fuselage side, at a bulkhead, or push/pull on the wing struts
near the ends..... NEVER on the stab or fin !

As Bob says...be cautious of how/what/where. Always push sideways with both
palms out flat on two bulkheads. I've been flying mine for 11 years now with
no handles. Life would be easier with them that's for sure. Difficult to get
a good hold on the tailwheel when stuck in 3 feet of snow and U can't get
her turned enough with just power. Hard on the back grabbing the tailwheel
from down out of the snow......lifting 2 + feet and trying to haul sideways
with the load of skis pushing new snow while you try to move the airplane.

Hello,

Could the handle be fix? Will alterate the airflow for the elevator? To
much drag?

But hey, pushing on the tail in this instance avoided disaster in the next take-
off!
Just giving you a bad time Bob. :)

Hello Si
I met you briefly at Oshkosh and admired you beautiful Rebel. I am glad you
step in here about your ground handling device. I am sure you can answer all
their questions. I understand you had surgery since Oshkosh I hope
everything is going well. Hope to see you at Oshkosh 09.
