Post by Mike Betti » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:35 am

Ok thanks all,
Couple more brake questions:
Are there any instructions in the manual on this subject, I haven't found
them?
Do the master lower fittings go to the brakes and uppers to the resevoir?
The only tubing I received was some Parker Parflex .035 wall, seems kind of
light, is that the stuff to use?
The fittings are compression type, shouldn't there be an insert in the hose
to support it from collapsing?
Where does the resevoir get mounted?
Thanks again,
Mike Betti

[rebel-builders] Brake lines

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:35 am

Yes Mike...lower fitting is the pressure line that goes to the caliper and
upper is the feed from the reservoir.

That is the correct 1/4" tube...nothing wrong with it (although 3/16 would
be better pressure capacity wise) and have yet to see it blow unless someone
rode their brakes for too long and overheated the line right at the caliper.
Generally only a problem on high landing speed aircraft (which the Elite is
not)....but Angus did cook one off his amphibs...probably from brake drag to
taxi the length of the grass strip. I've never had a problem in the 11+
years my rebel has been flying.

Just make sure your line is cut square and fully seated into the fitting
before tightening the nut. Some of the fittings have a built in center
spiget...but many do not and have not seen it be an issue if assembly is
done correctly. Make sure the tube is warm before tightening the nut. If
it's really cold put the end in some hot water...if you have room
temperature just the heat of your hand should be more than sufficient. After
you have assembled the lines do not fill them for a couple days. Re-snug the
tube nuts after a couple days and then fill your lines.

Reservoir goes anywhere you can put it...where it's handy to fill it up when
necessary. Even that's not a big issue as I fill from the caliper up using a
12V electric windshield washer pump. Filling this way leaves the line
absolutely air free right from the start.

Or for less frequent use a $3. oil can with a thumb powered pump and a
plastic hose spout will fill them. Just cut the hose and slip it over
the bottom caliper fitting...

Mike:

The Parker tubing is the stuff they use, and I concur withyour
assessment of it. The master cylinder connection is as you described.
The reservoir supplied is junk - tube keeps slipping off, and can't be
mounted that easily. I went for the Matco reservoir from ACS (P/N
06-11230) and hung it from an L shaped bracket near the top of the
firewall on the pilot's side.

My reservoir is a plastic tank that has 2 tabs on it for mounting and also has some sort of hook on the opposite end for maybe a hose to slide into, I don't know what the purpose of that is. Almost like you can mount it to a hose. Then there is a 90 fitting screwed into the bottom. Is this the one you had too Al?

[rebel-builders] Brake lines

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:38 am

I'll try and find a picture for you of a Rebel I rebuilt after going on it's
back in the snow. It has some nice trailing fairings made screwed on the
trailing edge. I thought they may have deformed with landing loads...but
considering what the owner put them through they seem to hold up amazingly
well. The edge material was just the Rebel Flaperon tailing edge
material...or easily made up yourself on a brake.

The brake lines that run down along the gear legs, can the leg be drilled

for a future disaster?

Not riveted..drilled and tapped 6-32..top bottom and middle. Really doubtful
it has any great effect on leg strength considering you can get legs from
Groves gun drilled for brake lines.

Dave Ricker

[rebel-builders] Brake lines

Post by Dave Ricker » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:38 am

Mike

If I'm not mistaken the photo Wayne put up shows the gear leg with the MAM
supplied trailing edge "fairing" which is intended to cover up the brake line as
it goes down to the wheel. That's standard on spring gear or at least our Elite
anyhow so it "should" be documented in the manual.

BTW, you can get the MAM gear legs gun drilled also for a price.

Ok thanks Wayne, I'll take it as an opinion, but a good one at that.

Not riveted..drilled and tapped 6-32..top bottom and middle. Really doubtful
it has any great effect on leg strength considering you can get legs from
Groves gun drilled for brake lines.

Thanks for the pics, I see what you mean. It looks like it is riveted to
the leg. In your opinion, is it ok to drill the leg as such?

[rebel-builders] Brake lines

Didn't realize it was standard Dave. Thought the owner had done this on his
own. Thanks for the confirmation for Mike....so it's factory approved not
just opinion approved!
