Take your pick. Leading edge (last 2 bays only!), wing tip or in the nose
bowl ala Cessna. I prefer the wing tips and have been putting them there
since 1994.

What do people do for landing and taxi lights. If the lights are put
in the leading edge of the wing, doesn't that require cutting the front
spar? Doesn't that weaken the wing? Murphy's web site shows a kit
with the landing lights in the leading edge.

Yep the spar is taken out in the landing light bay but it's so far out on
the wing that it doesn't matter, last or second last bay from the tip.

Hi All

The paperwork that came with my set of landing lights said any of the last 3
bays. The base fits between two of the nose ribs, and you cut away the front
spar between the two ribs.

Have I missed something and this has been changed to last 2 bays ?

Guess where I've put mine ?

You're fine Nig. Wasn't thinking of the bay right at the wing tip as it
would interfer with the bezzle fitting...so second or third bay in.

Really? The spar is affected? Not on a Super Rebel. Hard to believe an
Elite wing is that much smaller. Plenty of room ahead of the spar to fit
the Murphy leading edge light kit. I put mine just outside of where the
lift strut attaches.

I beg to differ with you Mike...but there is no difference between the
Rebel/Elite or SR/Moose wing layout and you have to remove the front spar to
install the leading edge light system.

I would contact the factory to see if they have any concerns of having a
foot of the front spar missing mid wing.

Dang, if you say so Wayne it's gotta be true. Now I have to go look at my

remember right. Why does removing a bit of front spar bother me so much now
and apparently didn't back then? My brain must have taken a break that day.

[rebel-builders] Landing and Taxi Lights

Figure better to scare you than to ignore it Mike. Probably not an issue
with the .032 leading edge skin but I'd sure give Darryl a call and ask.
I've seen others done like yours as well, but MAM does caution in the
installation that you should only install in the outer three bays. The light
box does gets riveted to the skin to replace some strength....but you do
lose the continous bending moment capablity of the complete front spar when
you cut a foot of it out mid span. Darryl may suggest some kind of
splice/spar cap across the gap to replace some strength. Probably not to
hard to do it he does working thru the hole you've made for the light. The
other concern of course would be the hole in the leading edge itself
removing the torsional rigidity of the "D" the leading edge forms. Hopefully
I'm just needlessly scaring your, but I'd rather do that than have you do
the California CH601 senerio from a few weeks back... that bent the wings
back and killed two gentlemen.

Cheers,
Wayne

We removed a section of the front spar between two ribs and then mounted the
light bracket in its place Mike... the bracket actually replaces that
segment of spar. I was there when you cut it out, and you were fine with it
then. ;-)

[rebel-builders] Landing and Taxi Lights

I don't think it's been mentioned in this thread yet, but as some may
know, Dave Fife's Hoerner Rebel wing tips come in two models. One has no
lights, and the other has a pre-molded location for landing lights,
along with brackets and 55W halogen bulbs -- all for just $30 more. Dave
says the 55W bulbs are not as bright as normal landing lights, but the
brackets can also handle widely available, inexpensive 100W halogen
bulbs if preferred. After seeing the many good words about Dave's tips
on this list, I ordered a pair of the tips with lights, and am looking

What do people do for landing and taxi lights. If the lights are put
in the leading edge of the wing, doesn't that require cutting the front
spar? Doesn't that weaken the wing? Murphy's web site shows a kit
with the landing lights in the leading edge.
