For those of you looking for an acceptable engine model for an airplane
project, may I suggest a call to Lycoming in PA at 717-327-7274 publications
department? For about $5.00 they will send you information on their
publication SSP-393 Certified Engine List. It covers every model from O-235
to IO-720. It is easy to use. Find the engine you are interested in on the
list, it gives you: horse power, TO RPM, Fuel type, and Compression ratio
and most importantly same as or similar to another listed engine and the
differences. Such as magneto type, carburetor, Fuel injector, fuel pump,
fixed or constant speed propeller, counterweights, prop bolt mounting size,
engine mounting configuration, and a lot of other good stuff. This is
approved data acceptable to the FAA. I have used it to modify engines (with
a 337) to meet the requirements to be used in a different airplane with
different propeller and carburetion. This should make picking out an engine
for your project a simple task.
Another publication you all should have in your Lycoming library is service
letter number L114; it gives a complete listing of special service
publications.
