On the Elite I used the Aeroflash combined colour/white lights (plus
strobes) (ACS # 156-0039-12V), and didn't bother with a dedicated light on
the tail. The inspector didn't object.

As supplied, they need the grounding of the nav light improved - it just
relies on trapping the ground braid between the base and the cover, and mine
failed in the first month.

Not sure what the Canadian regs say, but the way the US regs read, the tip
strobes with the white light give the proper lighting view. If going LED's
check with the person doing the certification. It was a problem in one area, but
the examiner was FAA direct instead of a DAR. If your past that point, the
EAA will give you names of a DAR in your area. The EAA supports the led
lights.

What about the red beacon on the tail? Is this required in the USA if you
already have wingtip position lights?

Nope, the red beacon is not required. Position lights only. I do run tip
strobes too, but no beacon. Curt N97MR

Yes ! The white lights on the back of the tips meet the requirements
for a white light visible from behind. No need for a separate white
light on the tail .... although you might need one on top as a "mooring
light" if you were going to anchor on floats at night ... That would
sure be hard on a battery, I would think ! :-)

The preferred way is inside a plastic or metal tube near the spar.
For some reason, the factory did not recommend running wires inside
the leading edge D tube ....

I put my tube in the leading edge and worked fine. I didn't have to secure
it to the ribs. When I did mine this way it was recommended by MAM.

I ran mine inside a plastic tube in the D tube up to the strut, then down
the strut. Once the forward attach bolt is in place, it'd be pretty cramped
getting wires in a protective sleeve past the bolt head.

OOooopps ! You're right Al ! I forgot to mention that the tube
only went tip to the strut, then wires down the strut !! This is
a LOT easier way to get the wires, and pitot tubing, to the back
of the panel ...

A good reason for not using the leading edge - you'd have to
go back through the spar to get to the strut !!

I think the objection to the leading edge was based on loose wires,
as opposed to wires inside an insulated tube. That way, they couldn't
vibrate, wear through the skin, or insulation, and short out ...
I believe there have been cases of loose wires wearing right through
skins !!

Yep, and another thing, install a terminal block on the front of the spar
somewhere you can get at it near the front strut attach access cover. Do it
before you rivet the LE skins on - much easier (I didn't, so I know!).
