wow, you sure took a risk with a u-haul truck, when i moved my rebel in a
u-haul, the transmission mounted parking brake stuck and caught on fire, had
4 cop cars and one fire truck show up because of all the phone calls as i
drove down the highway smoking like hell and not knowing the tranny was
melting away, then 8 hour wait for repair truck, moral of the story is never
use a u-haul truck

anyway time to build, what stage is your kit at, you may need some mods to
big it up to current standards

That's hilarious Mike, at least for a listener -- in retrospect. I had a
nearly new truck which ran fine, though the suspension is still pretty
tight. We encountered moderate but worrisome turbulence (aka, old cement
freeway washboard) during the 15-20 mile descent into Umatilla, WA,
which got the crew pretty concerned about the cargo. However, dialing
U-Haul airspeed back to V(a) -5 (55 MPH) settled things down enough to
survive most of the bronco stuff. At least the plane seems to have
survived, not sure about my lower back yet.

The project is well along, with most of the airframe done, including
most of the fuse, empenage, wings & tanks, etc. Still have struts,
doors, rigging, all FWF, panel, misc. systems and interior, and, and....
Jim has already done all of the service bulletins, and most of the mods
that I would have chosen to do. There are only a couple mods I may
consider adding, really.

In other words, 90% done and 90% to go -- and no legit excuse for me not
to finish! Yikes again.

back of every vehicle "Adventure in Moving". ;-) Crazy

Congratulation Ron,

You got a good deal. Jim did a very nice job on that Rebel. I was surprised he sold it for as little as he did...as complete as it was. I know a friend, he was thinking of buying it too but I guess he waited to long. Good for you! You will not regret your choice. What engine are you planning? Jim was originally planning a Jab but I felt that was under HP for the Rebel.

The Jabiru 3300 (120 HP) was my preference, whether for the Rebel or a
couple other planes I considered, even before seeing Jim's project on
the market. Consequently, the 3300 mount and nose bowl he had from
Jabiru were an additional plus to me.

BTW, it recently became official that starting in late April or
thereabouts, all new 3300's will ship with hydraulic lifters (which the
80 HP 2200 has had about a year) which is also a welcome improvement, IMHO.

Hi Ron,

The Jab engines get their rated HP at 3300 RPM. As we know, this means a shorter prop to keep your tip speeds down. Most air cooled engines, without prop reduction gear, reach max HP at 2700 RPM for a good reason. A shorter prop means less STOL performance and the Rebel is a STOL airplane, not a fast glass plane looking for top end speed where a shorter may not be such a disadvantage.

Don't know what your looking for but the Jab just isn't a good choice for a Rebel if you want STOL. You will be unhappy with its performance. If STOL is what you want then you want as long a prop as possible. Long props have better efficiancy.

Thanks for the input, Bruce. I have carefully considered the pros and
cons of this argument before but on balance, including several other
factors that are important to me, though perhaps not to others, I'm
comfortable with this choice of engine.
