Thanks

Hi John !

No problem with an O-235 - I flew all over the country with an
O-235-C2C -- even crossed Canada ONCE on Murphy 1500 amphibs (a BIT
underpowered for that !).

It will take longer to get off the ground than a Rotax 912 (80 hp)
Rebel, burn twice the fuel, and cost a lot more in maintenance.
It will climb slightly better on hot days, fully loaded, but likely
cruise a bit slower.... We flew one of each for almost 10 years.
Still like the 912-S for our next Rebel - with 100 hp, it should
handily outperform even the O-235-L2C, being over 125 lb lighter !

If my number translation is correct, the C1B has a hollow crank,
set up for a constant speed prop - this can be an extra maintenance
headache, as there has been a corrosion AD about the inside of the
crank. It could be a bit heavier, too ... Constant speed on an
O-235 is a bit unlikely - maybe my guide is off on this one ...
If you were going to use an O-235, I would really try to get an
-L2C or an - N2C .... they have about 18 REAL horsepower more
than the older models, and can give a cruise of 110+ mph, instead
of 92 - 95 mph. You can then pull 2 notches of negative flapperon.

G'day John !

Where abouts in OZ are you ? ... (I'm in Sydney)

We put a Lycoming 0-235 L2A - modified with the 9.7:1 pistons - which brings it up to 125 horsepower ( you can only do this modification if your engine has a larger through cylinder studs ) - which I am pretty sure the C1B doesn't have ! :o(

I actually sold this engine only a few weeks ago to a bloke in Victoria

the Rebel will fly quite all right on the 115 hundred fifteen horsepower from the C1B .... You will probably be using 18 to 24 litres per hour at cruise & doing around 90 knots
I have now fitted an IO-320 (modified to 180 HP) - and I cruise at 105 knots - but burning 35 litres / hour .... ( not really worth it is it !?! :o( .... BUT I get a really short takeoff roll and climb out at around 1,200ft. per minute :o)

drop me a line if you want to have a talk about the Rebel !
