O-320, one more prop question

Really depends on your definition of "climb" & "cruise" - these are
arbitrary terms to describe different pitches, and the effects will differ
with engine size.

It is not uncommon to see 10 to 15 mph lower cruise with a finer
pitch prop. You reach a point where the engine can exceed redline even in
climb, at which point the prop loses efficiency. If you go too coarse,
the engine is lugging in all regimes, and the engine cannot develop full
power. I suppose the ideal is one that 'only just' lets you reach red line
rpm in level flight .... ????

This is why a variable pitch prop is so valuable - even if it is only
ground-adjustable. This is why the warp Drive props are so popular !

You could survey the flying Rebels on amphibs, and average the pitch
angles they like. You must convert the angle, in degrees, into inches of
pitch, for most prop makers....

It is said that every homebuilder (who uses fixed pitch props) will
own THREE props - his first guess, his second guess, and the one he is
flying with now !! :-)

OK...One more prop question.

Has anyone compared a climb and cruise prop on the same airplane? I am
trying to find our how much cruise speed you lose with the climb prop and
how much climb you lose with the cruise prop. Right now we are leaning
towards the climb prop for the areas we will be mostly flying in. Thanks
again in advance.

Ryan, Like Bob P. says, "everyone's definitions of climb and cruise are
different"! I just put a brand new Sensenich 74" Dia X 56" pitch
(74-DM-7S8-0-56) "climb" propellor on a Zero SMOH - 150HP O-320-E2D. It is
giving me 1900 to 2100FPM climb at an "all up" aircraft weight of approx.
1350lbs.(what a ride!) and a cruise at 2500RPM's of 127MPH verified by
GPS.(everyone still think forward C of G's slow you down). I can only get
2680RPM (2700 redline)out of this engine in cruise with the throttle slammed
home and yes I have checked the full scale of my tach with an optical
tachometer (and verified full throw of the throttle plate). Sure glad I
didn't buy the cruise prop (74 X 58) they recommended!!!!!!!
As a side note, no matter how much I keep tweaking that Warp Drive on my
personal Rebel (with a Zero SMOH -150HP O-320-C2A), I can not make it
duplicate the superior performance of the new Sensenich propellor. Not a lot
of difference though and if you didn't have 2 similar weight Rebels to fly
back to back like I do, you probably wouldn't be able to detect the
difference. On the other hand the Warp Drive weighs 28+ lbs less than the
Sensenich and also costs less than half as much!

Wayne
