For what it's worth, I keep meticulous records for every imaginable
expense related to my Murphy Moose. Thus far I have a total of 220.6
hours on the Moose with operating costs running $115.55 (US) per hour.

Hmmm. I've always made it a point to keep no records at all, that could
possibly be interpreted as operating costs, for any aircraft that I've
owned. I just keep telling folks that it's not nearly as bad as it's made
out to be.

Further, to be honest, I'm surprised that Ted's number isn't higher. Are
you burning Mogas or Avgas, Ted?

Av gas. I push it to the runway by hand to keep the gas costs down.
<grin>. I also fly from an airport that probably has some of the least
expensive gas in the country on any given day. Some days there are 6 or
8 planes lined up to get fuel that fly in from other nearby airports.

Well, here in Lafayette, the current price for Exxon 100LL is about
$4.30/gal. Can you believe that we're only about 45 miles from the
refinery!?!? I firmly believe that we've got the most expensive gas in the
country. I've gotta get my STC for Mogas. :(

Ted,

I am curious about the breakdown. If your comfortable sharing, could you tell me (us) what percentage is fuel, insurance, etc. The big categories.

I just sent Rick a copy of my current spreadsheet. While it is personal
[cost/expense] information, I'm Ok to share such with anyone that emails
me privately. Everyone's perspective on what expense to include/exclude
is different; I don't want to make any more of a science project of
analyzing costs than I already have. Plus, looking too much at the
expense end of things is never fun <grin>.

On another tab in my spreadsheet I keep entries that mirror those of my
logbook. I've heard too many stories of folks that lose their paper
logbook and can't recreate the #'s.

We get our home heating fuel delivered by Alaska Aerofuel... I asked them
yesterday what 100LL was selling for... $3.88 in the wing, or $3.44 in a
tank not attached to an aircraft. The flight instructor I used had a 180
gal tank in the back of his truck, it was common to have the fuel truck
pumping into the tank in his truck at the same time we were pumping from
that tank into the airplane. But as long as they don't touch the airplane
we save anywhere from 40 to 60 cents a gallon.
