Rebel: What next?

Well, I have my Rebel setup in my garage and some tools together. If you all
recall, this was supposed to be a 90% complete model, but in studying what
has been done, I believe that estimate to be very optimistic.

I went through the manual and this is what I can best figure out what was
done up to this point.

Chapter Title Completed
1. Helpful Hints ---
2. Aileron Assembly X
3. Fabric Covering NS
4. Rudder Assembly X
5. Elevator Assembly 80%
6. Elev-Trim Assembly 80%
7. Elev-Rudder Tip Assembly NS
8. Stabilizer Assembly 90%
9. Fin Assembly 90%
10. Wing Assembly X
11. Wet Tank Assembly X
12. Wing Tip NS
13. Fuselage Assembly X
14. 0320 Fuselage Modifications X
15. Float Hard Point Installation X
16. Spring Gear Assembly X
17. Landing Gear N/A
18. Landing Gear Covering N/A
19. Tailskid X
20. Stabilizer Installation X
21. Wing Struts X
22. Wing Strut Fairings NS
23. ontrol Installation NS
24. Stabilizer Faring Installation NS
25. Seat Assembly 60%
26. Seatbelt Installation NS
27. Door Assembly 70%
28. Door Lock Assembly 40%
29. Wing Fairing Installation NS
30. Windshield Installation N/A
31. Skylight Installation NS
32. Pre-Molded Windshield Installation 25%
33. 912 Cowling N/A
34. 912 Engine Installation N/A
35. O-320 Lycoming Engine Installation 60%
36. O-320 Speed Cowling Installation 60%
37. Ultralight Rudder N/A
38. Ultralight Elevator N/A

Instrument Panel Assembly 35%

The work that is completed thus far is supurb, but there are some
modifications that I will be doing like some of the OMs, and the instrument
panel changes to suite my taste.

It looks like he skipped around quite a bit. I'm sure ther were reasons for
that. I am wondering what I should work on next? In looking at this list,
does it give you guys enough of a clue to offer some suggestions?

Also, I can work in my garage on the aircraft, and by March will have a pole
barn shop completed large enough that I can assemble the complete aircraft
inside and then pull the wings back off before transporting to the airport.

I guess I'm saying that so that you all know that space in not a limitation
once March rolls around.

thanks
Jim!

Hi Jim !

Just off the top - looks like finishing up the tail would be a good
place to start. That's a good place to get experience, with smaller parts.
That's where the manual likes to start new builders... then the ailerons.

Check archives for the outer rib & skin reinforcements, and possibly
adding AIL-26 (?) bushings now, rather than later ... don't forget the
POGs (large nylon washers), too !

THanks Bob: I was leaning in that direction as well as cleaning up the panel.
I'll start reading up on the instructions for the tail.

Rebel: What next?

And then the wheels so it can be moved?

Perhaps one bushing at the lower rudder pivot is sufficient? There
wasn't a lot of meat on that bracket so since I have access to a lathe I
lightly pressed a smaller diameter bushing in instead of an AIL-26.

Outer rib reinforcements on elevator only not the rudder.

I timed the fabric and paint for the Fall when the temperature was
reasonable and bugs were low, but pick up the chemicals if you drive by
anywhere (OSK, Sun'n fun, etc,?) that has them.

Rebel: What next?

Hi Jim: My suggestion would be to start at the beginning of the manual,
completing what you can do as you go along. Keep in mind of course the
pre-closure inspection - if your in Canada that is. I would strongly suggest
you also locate and match up all the hardware necessary for each area at
final assembly. The Rebel I am helping with at this time has been very short
coming in this area. This would give you time to order the missing items
before you actually need them. Work with the manual on hardware inventory as
we found we had everything according to the shipping documents, its just
that a lot of necessary items where not listed. Have fun, it is a great
airplane. Bob J

I thought about that but I am worried that in some cases there are steps
that should be held off until other steps are completed.

Can you guys tell me; for a 1997 Rebel #572, can you build the aircraft
following the manual from step one all the way through to the end? Is
Murphy's building sequence correct?

Jim,

I don't know anything about building airplanes but, I can guarantee
if you try and strictly follow, either the new or the old, manual
STEP BY STEP you will screw up.

I'm a little worried about that. Bob P's suggestion is probably that best one
that this point. This is an easier area to work on and will get me acclimated,
(did I spell that right?), before I move on to the other areas.

Boy, that was a good laugh. NO, you can not follow the manual step by step
without running into problems. Sorry, but it's just not that straight
forward. Pic a part, read the entire chapter relating to that part, make
some notes as to what goes where when, highlight steps in the manual that
would be better done at a later point, ask questions on the list if you're
not sure. That's the best any of us can do.
