Hi Dale,
I have tried several options over the years, Green Bay and rented a car,
camped under the airplane, dorm room at Oshkosh and guest at lake front
home. Other than staying at the lake, camping was by far the best
experience. The down side of airplane camping is they don't want cooking in
the aircraft area and the local food on the field gets old quick. The dorm
deal was hell, we were in the top floor of oldest dorm, HOT, to hot to
sleep. If you do the dorm bring a fan. The food at the college was very
good, I will camp and ride the bus to the college for some meals if I go
again.

Hi Dale
Went for the first time last year for a week and never saw everything. Very
overwelming!! Had a ball. Wanted to get together with the other Murphy guys
but I couldn't find the time. Took way too much stuff and camped under the
wing on the homebuilt grounds. Showers were ok if u got there early enough.
Had most of the meals on the grounds and ate downtown every now and then for
a break. Sold my last plane and hopefully, paint permitting, will have my
Rebel flying in a couple of months. Was going to try and make it a trip
every other year but my buddy I went with last year called and is going
again. Soooo I'm going too. Take some ear plugs if yr a lite sleeper.

Dale-

I have to disagree about the dorms! I have stayed at the college in Oshkosh
every year since 1984! You do need a fan if it's hot, but with the shuttle bus,
coming and going is pretty simple, and the beds are WAY more comfortable then
a sleeping bag. (But my idea of "roughing it" is when room service is late.)
Food is plentiful, and other options are available that are not near the field.

How do you plan to get to Oshkosh, and from where?

I must admit that the old timers (reservation wise) have it good, much
better facilities. Keep in mind if your a first time dorm user you get the
old dorm 3 blocks away from the bus and the men's and lady's bathrooms on
alternating floors. If you like dorms and it reminds you of past days, go
for it.

Hey Guys , Thanks for all the input on Oshkosh. Any other input is
appreciated and will take all suggestions into consideration. I just think
$120 a night is a lot. I try to plan my trips as much as I can so it is
sometime more enjoyable that way.
I am in Central PA.I don't know if I will drive myself or fly
commercial. I was planning on going to Sun N Fun as I usually do but since
MAM won't be there may not go this year not that they have to be there but I
would like to keep working on my project as it is starting to look like a
plane now. Thanks again. Dale Fultz SR-033

Nigel,

If you are going to buy a tent I would suggest you stop in one of the towns along the way from ORD to OSH and save a potential headache. The shelves in the discount houses in OSH get pretty bear during the show.

You will see signs and pass a Gander Mountain (www.gandermountain.com) store on the right side of the highway along that route but I can't remember the town. I think they sell quality outdoor gear but not certain about their prices. On the other hand, you should be able to find a tent at one of the Wal-Marts or Super Wal-Marts along the way cheap.

Hi Dale !

Tried 'em all - I think the best experience comes from driving in
and camping on the grounds. Camping under the wing is rough - the
facilities are nowhere near as good as in the campground, and you
are stuck with mostly overpriced junk food. Hotels (book a year or
2 in advance !!) are really stiff - the Super 8 was $189/night, last
time we checked...

If you drive in, you can get a good spot under trees to tent,
with camp store & showers nearby, and run into town for good restaurants
if you want a change. Also for laundomats ...

There's lots going on at night, or just socialize with neighbours -
it really adds to the experience. Sun n Fun is even better for
night life !! :-)

Hoping to get to Oshkosh this year with my son for the week and help out
with the POP group.

We're planning on getting a hire car to drive from ORD and then camp and
live on the site. Facilities looked good when we visited for a day several
years ago.

Not sure about bringing a small tent with us, or just buying one when we get
there - might be cheaper than excess luggage charge :-)

Look forward to seeing you there ! We have bought tents, when we
flew in - you're right - it will definitely be cheaper & less hassle
than bringing one along ! You can pick up a fairly roomy tent at
Wal-Mart for under $100 ... and sleeping bags & cots too ...

You can ship them home as freight, or maybe by mail afterward.
One night in a motel would cost more !

The suggestion to shop on the way is a good one, although there
is a super-size Wallymart in OSH, and they have a lot of camp stuff -
IF you get there early - like on the Friday BEFORE the show !

The only thing there can be hassles about are campfires - one
year we saw some guys on the flight line who started a campfire
UNDER THEIR WING !!!!! Needless to say, Security was there in
a flash !! :-0

If you didn't last time, BE SURE to head to the International
Tent & register - & find out what night the International Party is
on. This is ONE GREAT BASH, with a tanker of free beer, & food ! :-)
We'll see you at the Murphy booth !

Hoping to get to Oshkosh this year with my son for the week and help out
with the POP group.

We're planning on getting a hire car to drive from ORD and then camp and
live on the site. Facilities looked good when we visited for a day
several years ago.

Not sure about bringing a small tent with us, or just buying one when we
get there - might be cheaper than excess luggage charge :-)

CU all there
