fluting pliers/shrinker-stretcher/wing ribs

Posted: Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:45 pm

I too have the problem with the root ribs and No4 fuel bay solid rib being
twisted. The flange is not the problem however, as all flanges have been
removed on the extra root nose ribs that act as doublers, and the twist
remains in them as well.

This only affects the solid ribs, all other ribs with lightening holes/areas
are fine.

I'm going up to our airframe workshop this weekend so as soon as I find
someone who can solve this easily I'll post their solution.

Only problem with the fluting pliers is you have to avoid the plier
indenations when laying out the rivet holes whereas the shrinker leaves a
flat surface to rivet against.

In answer to Mike Jones question, I assume Keith's ribs are not straight
as
a result of the manufacturing process that created the flange. That gives
them a bit of a curve that needs to be removed. Again, an easy process
with
the pliers.

Keith,
I don't think it is possible to remove the twist, in fact they get worse
when you start pounding on them to make flat spots for the fuel fittings,
but don't worry, as you build the wing and cleco the skins on the solid
ribs, they will straighten out.

fluting pliers/shrinker-stretcher/wing ribs

Posted: Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:45 pm
by Mike Kimball
To get the not-quite-straight ribs clecoed in place with the skin I would
get one hole located using a rivet held upside down using the mandrel and
then work each of the next holes in place dropping upside down rivets into
place, mandrel first, into each hole as I worked the rib into place. Even
if you can't see the next hole, you can use the mandrel to work the rib a
bit at a time until you do see the hole. Sometimes I would have to poke a
long dowel through somewhere if there was access to push on the rib to get
things started. I would sometimes use one rivet mandrel in one hand to sort
of pull the rib a bit then use another one in the other hand through a
different skin hole to hold things while I worked the rib until I could drop
the rivet mandrel into the hole. Don't put any clecoes in until the entire
rib is located with upside down rivets. You can even get a bit of rib
movement by pushing on an upside down rivet that is already in a hole.
There was no skin wrinkling problem with my wings.

The word from all the guys in our airframes workshop is that the shape makes
the use of any stretcher very difficult. The best solution would also
involve heat treating, and in the end they all reckon simply using the skins
to pull them straight is going to be the best option, since they are of such
thin sheet.

Glad the easiest way seems to be the way to go.

The twist is what I'm talking abot. I spent quite a
bit of time trying to get one of the solid fuel bay
ribs flatter and couldn't. If you find out the trick
please let me know.

I too have the problem with the root ribs and No4
fuel bay solid rib being
twisted. The flange is not the problem however, as
all flanges have been
removed on the extra root nose ribs that act as
doublers, and the twist
remains in them as well.

This only affects the solid ribs, all other ribs
with lightening holes/areas
are fine.

I'm going up to our airframe workshop this weekend
so as soon as I find
someone who can solve this easily I'll post their
solution.

Only problem with the fluting pliers is you have to
avoid the plier
indenations when laying out the rivet holes whereas
the shrinker leaves a
flat surface to rivet against.

I spent a pleasant afternoon sitting on the deck
with my fluting pliers
and
a pile of ribs and had no trouble getting them
straight that way. I have a
shrinker/stretcher as well and have not found it
to be very useful. You
could do it with either tool, but I think the
fluting pliers are a lot
easier and works just fine.

In answer to Mike Jones question, I assume Keith's
ribs are not straight
as
a result of the manufacturing process that created
the flange. That gives
them a bit of a curve that needs to be removed.
Again, an easy process
with
the pliers.

I am trying to get the ribs straightened out so
they
are level. What is best to use to form them to be
level? I have a shrinker/stretcher, or should I
use a
fluting plier?

Thanks,
