importing from the states

Has any one dealt with bringing a amateur built, flying aircraft in from the
states?
Can it be done and what did you have to go through?
Taxes?
Registration?
border crossing?
I have a line on one not sure if it will be worth all the trouble.
Thanks.

Hi Cecil, if it's an amateur built in the US then all the flying
surfaces would have to be opened for inspection by MDRA just to start -
never mind anything else. Their rules are different than ours. I think
Wayne has done it before and he'll probably chime in here! It's much
easier going the other way.

importing from the states

If I didn't have snow on the runway.....I would have already had an O-320 x
Texas Rebel on 1800 Amphibs in the hangar for a mere $50K US!

Easier than going through the MDRA inspection process by a LOOOONNNNGGGGG
shot!

Have the seller fly it to FINAL destination (where you will be having TC do
the import inspection) to avoid getting grounded at a customs stop. Say he
is on a holiday, get the plane here and then drop him at Pearson to send him
home!

Contact TC - Jeff Langford or Wayne Juniper 1-416-952-0040. Even their
assistant Denise Lacroix can get you started. Ask for their package for
importing a homebuilt and she'll lead you from there.

The Elite I have in the hangar came out of Los Angeles CA. Was really easy
as Robert White (from Orillia), the buyer, has both Canadian and US
licenses. Transport Canada told him he could fly it around in Ontario under
his US licence until we got around to removing the N#'s and bringing it up
to Canadian Standards.

$110 like any other airplane ownership change and this also gave him C-FFIB
marks.

Aircraft must meet Chapter 549 and pass inspection similar to MDRA final.
Main things are gascolator and Canadian placards. It could have been that
the airplane was in my hangar and I did the work, but Jeff Langford checked
the logs to be sure they were filled out properly....had a quick look at the
airplane and stated "yep...it meets Canadian Standards" and then headed for
his car. Bob chased him to ask how much to make the cheque out for the
inspection and Jeff said "no charge". Apparently when they wrote the
exemption nobody thought to put a fee schedule change thru the Gazette....so
they can't charge a fee or mileage for Homebuilt imports or Owner
Maintenance inspections. If you are going to Import......Do it before it
gets handed over to MDRA is all I can say !

Like everything else in this Country....you're probably going to get a nice
little letter from the PST pricks in Oshawa, months later, asking you to
prove where you paid PST. If you're lucky you will never see anything from
the GST people....and why you don't want to stop at the border and declare
you are importing....or you'll be paying it right there before she ever
moves again.

I should add before my other message pops up. Aircraft MUST have 100 hours
of FLYING time in the logs. Got a pen! Kits mid constuction can not be
imported unless everything is still open for inspection!

Thanks for the fast response.
I was planning on trailering the aircraft across the border, so think I'll
be in for more than I planned for.
I will call transport Canada tomorrow to see what the steps and paper work I
need to get started.
Thanks

Does it have 100 hours on it and a current flight authority in the USA? Out
of it's "testing" phase? If not forget it. Why trailer and not fly? Damaged?
Even damaged it's importable if has more than 100 hours airtime to the best
of my knowledge...but check that one for sure with Wayne or Jeff.

Make sure you have an "adjusted" :O) bill of sale for them customs people to
apply taxes to!!. You may also need to give advance notice of importation if
trailering in..... but I'm not sure on that. I know 48 hours is required for
bringing an antique car in with all title and ownership documents needing to
be at the border before you are.

importing from the states

One other thing "turned on a light bulb" today Cecil!

You will have to pay $250 for the application for a C of A for amater built
airplane...just like if you were building here in Canada. U just don't have
the $400+ inspection fee on top like you would going thru the MDRA
inspection program. Pretty sure you have to give them the $110 I originally
stated for the C of R as well.

Cheers,
Wayne
