The Murphy Builders Site

As some of you know, I'm a student pilot with 42 hours in a J-3 Cub, and
hoping to take my check ride this month. I've been studying the Rebel
for a couple of years, and finally got to sit in one at Oshkosh last
summer. I'm pretty sure I'd like to get one, but have never been able to
fly in one. I was set to take the airlines (!) to MAM this weekend to do
that -- even had the tickets -- but had to cancel because, of course,
the weather up there wasn't cooperating, and probably won't for awhile.
Obviously, it wouldn't be too smart to buy one without having at least
one demo ride and a couple of people have suggested I should just ask
here on the list.

So, I'm hoping there is somebody not too far away who would be willing
to give me a ride in a Rebel. I live near Santa Cruz, Calif., and would
be more than happy to drive anywhere in California, Nevada, etc.,
anytime, and share the AVGAS. Thanks in advance for your consideration.

Sorry can't help you with the ride (mine's still on amphibs and there's a
wee bit of snow in the yard here in Ontario/Canada)...but just thought I'd
note that I had never seen a Rebel..let alone sat in one before my kit was
in my garage. Call me stupid....but 14 years later and I'm still putting
them together and flying them....when I could have bought anything else to
fly if I had wanted to.

Talk about stupid, try this on...
I got a ride in one and during the ride said to myself, "Self, ok, cool, got
that out of my system and I think I'll be okay without one." I bought one
within the next year! :)

Seriously, I think anyone setting out to invest 5 years and $40k in a kit
plane ought to get a ride in one (and I know many do not). Just be patient
and keep shamelessly pokin around. I think most would be happy to make the
offer and its just the logistics that need to fall into place at the right
time. BTW, in the demo ride I took, the pilot politely didn't want to show
off and I didn't want to impose much, so we didn't take the plane through
what it is capable of -- not even close. He also felt his flaperon control
wasn't functional enf and was near gross and forward CG, so we couldn't stall
very slow. But I did get a feel for the great visibility and control feel,
and later on from this list felt like my concerns for the high stall/mush
speed were not at all typical.

If you want to talk about "confident," my better half and I ordered the
Tailfeathers Kit for our Rebel Elite in 2000, the Wing Kit in 2002, and the
fuselage this past summer (2005). The kit is on a truck headed east across Canada
as I type! We never left the ground in a Murphy aircraft until this past
summer.

From the time we studied the specs and sat in the display aircraft at
Oshkosh in 1999, we never doubted that the Elite was the plane for us. We were
lucky enough to get some stick time in both an Elite out west, and a Rebel in
Brampton, Ontario this summer. When the pieces finally fell into place for our
rides this this year, we knew we were right! We still have the smirks on our
face from the fun of the rides, and we're pulling rivets with renewed
enthusiasm.

Keep up the shameless begging. I only wish I had a finished plane I could
take you up in. And start pulling rivets!

Don't feel bad. I have never riden in a Rebel either.

I started looking at kits back in the early 90's. I
looked at several options, Kifox, Avid, RV, Smithcub,
Northstar, and several other kits and kept coming back
to the Murphy Rebel. I made a list of what I really
needed vs. what I wanted. I found out that the need
list was a lot shorter than the want list. Plus after
flying my 172 for years you find out your mission
changes over the years. That may be why I kept coming
back to the Rebel, It filled all the need requirements
and a lot of the want requirements.

Then there is the question of expense and I think the
Rebel is one of the best "Values for the dollar" out
there.

Now, if I can just get it built before I die I'll be
alright.

Thanks to all who have responded on this thread for the encouragement
and expressions of confidence in the Rebel which (in spite of the
frequent critiques of the manual) I certainly share. This group
continues to be an inspiration for everyone, whether wannabes (me),
newbies, heads down riveters, flyers and tweakers.

Ben in Davis, CA -- Thanks for your reply especially. It looks like
you're the closest Rebel builder, at least on the Frappr! map
(http://www.frappr.com/murphyrebel). I do get up there from time to
time. Will try to look you up next time I head that direction. Would
like to see your progress, and cheer you on, in person.
