Seat weight

Posted: Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:41 pm

Hi All:
Does anyone have the weight of their seats? (with or without the base) I'm looking for a suitable car seat and want to know what a finished seat typically weighs so I don't end up with too much additional weight - if any.
Thanks,
Tom Packard

I think there are two reasons to stay with the MAM seat. 1) It's gonna be
lighter than any automobile seat. 2) It was one of the easiest parts in the
kit to assemble.

FYI - John Mach of Cheyenne, Wyoming is selling an O-320 Rebel, listed
on Trade-a-Plane (http://tappix.com/733580) He installed seats from
Oregon Aero (OA) that look very nice -- and slim. I don't know what they
weigh but FWIW, OA claims to make very safe seats. Might be worth
checking out.

Thanks Steve, Mike and Jon for your comments.
The reason I asked about seat weight was a result of seeing some auto
racing seats in JC Whitney that looked good and the price was right. ($160
fabric and $300 leather) I called them to get the weight and the guy said
they were 37 lbs. Even with a steel frame, it's hard to believe they weigh
that much. The MAM steel frame base only weighs 4 lbs. I agree with Mike
that the MAM seats would be the easiest way to go, but I wonder how safe the
frame is. Could be worse, onceI was looking to buy a Wittman Tailwind and
the builder had used lawn chair frames to build his seats.

Based on memory of the seats that I've removed from cars, I'd say that
37 lbs is lighter than many car seats but still more than twice as
heavy as my finished Rebel seat. A seat with springs of any kind in it
needs a fairly substantial frame.
