I'm looking for ideas on fasteners for the baggage curtain??

Actually I have several ideas but they are proving to be too expensive
or too hard to obtain in reasonable quantities.

thanks
Ken

Ken,
We found a "push and turn to lock" fastener at Lowes home supply. They are commonly used to fasten tonneau covers and pickup bed covers. The fastener base rivets to a surface. Pivoting on an axis perpendicular to the base is a
"D" shaped piece. Another metal section installs in the cover material. To attach the cover the metal section in the cover is pushed down over the base rotating piece and rotating piece turned 90 degrees locking the cover in place.

This is a lot easier to use than describe. Another source might be a convertible top shop.

Have found no problems with mine velco'd in all around the perimeter. Hasn't
fallen off in 10+ years. Howard's was done by Trimair and is held in with
both velcro and a few turning locks similar to what Ralph has described.

They were my first choice Ralph but the minimum was $200. ish from
Spaenaur. I haven't seem them elsewhere but I'll check out the Home
Despot and such.

Similarly Wayne, I haven't found a source for small quantities of velcro
with permanent glue. The peel and stick stuff that I've played with
doesn't last a month but maybe I just need a better source. That brings
us to glued on plain velcro and I just now thought that maybe some
urethane sealant would do the trick on aluminum. Those RV guys would
probably just slop a little pro-seal on it during lunch eh Ben? ;)

Mike - Yes good snaps would do the trick too but same problem of where
to get them at reasonable cost. I'll do some more hunting...

thanks guys

Seriously, I would consider proseal for glueing down velcro. It's worst
feature might be that you never will be able to get it off. I agree on
adhesive backed velcro not lasting long. I've also tried adding rubber
contact cement to the back of what used to be working adhesive backed velcro
and it brings it out another year or two, depending on how close it is to
fuel drips. But for long lasting strong stick, spread on that dark gray
stuff and lick the knife! :)

I was going to suggest the same item that Ralph suggests. I know you can get
them at Boat US and West Marine, but at about 7.00 per pair. Likely, an
independent canvase repair / fabricater might give a better price. (Especially if
you have him sew up the curtain!)

Bob Patterson

baggage curtain fastener

Post by Bob Patterson » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:41 pm

Hi Ken !

I would go with the Velcro & spray-on upholstery grade contact
cement. Trim-Air did that for the curtain in FOKM, and it's still
working great after about 10 years !

I have snaps now - this is a bad idea !! The curtains are
usually made of Naugayde (mine is leather ...) with a 1/2" or so
of upholstery foam, and some kind of cloth on the back - to make
them stiffer & better insulators. The snaps are a pain, as the
material shrinks with time, and it's difficult to stretch to
meet the snaps - this gets even more awkward if you have a lot
of baggage to work over top of ...

Same problem with the pop-through & twist fasteners - after
a while, or in heat or cold, the curtain just doesn't fit right
anymore ! Velcro, in about a 1" wide flat section around the
perimeter of the curtain, allows for stretch, and is easy to
fasten - also, if you have carpet, leave an extra 1 inch flap
at the bottom of the curtain, folded forward, so the velcro
can fasten to the carpet. It's good to put the 'hook'
part of the Velcro on the curtain, and the 'loop' side on the
lip around the baggage bulkhead - doesn't catch junk, and easier
on you crawling in & out of back....

Actually, instead of foam on the back of the curtain, a
couple of layers of that metal-foil-covered bubble pack insulation
would be great - it's very light, and stops noise & cold !

Hi Mike !

Flange direction doesn't matter - most just rivet a strip
of .025 aluminum all around the flange, leaving about 1" exposed
to attach the Velcro to ... add spacers if necessary....

If you go one bulkhead back, you might get into C of G
problems.... Also, it's hard to turn around and grab something
from the back, if it trickles down to the rear ... ;-)

Thinking about drinks and desserts for the in-flight meals
we are served on long Rebel flights .... ;-) The hostess is
marvelous company ! Of course, after meals, she resumes duty
as Navi-Guess, (navig-ess ??), and co-pilot. ;-)

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:41 pm

Mine is just Velcro'd to the back of the bulkhead. A little harder to put in
place...but not big deal if you work from one side to the other and then
Velcro across the floor. I can't remember if I used contact cement on top of
the built in peel off strips on my Velcro. I have bulk rolls that is indeed
original Velcro brand...not an aftermarket rip off paying royalties (or at
least they should be) to the patent holder. Spray cans of 3M contact cement
work well (the first time U use them anyhow) or just use the little glass
bottle and brush for a nice coating....and on the curtain part peel off
strips and a few staples here and there if I remember right....and it hasn't
fallen off. Howard's has as Bob has pointed out to...a strip riveted to the
back of the bulkhead that extends inboard about an inch to pick up the
Velcro and cone plug material. Makes for easier installation and a better
push to fasten.

Mine is an extra bulkhead back due to the extra seats I have and we just
moved Robert's back in his Elite too. Come one Bob...where's your sales
campain....the Rebel flies so well Bob you can just get out of your seat and
go retrieve anything you need from WAY back there!! LOL ;O)

baggage curtain fastener

Post by Drew Dalgleish » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:41 pm

Hi Ken Instead of a curtain on my plane I cut a peice of corplast (sp?) to
fit then covered that with foam. a couple peices of velcro top and bottom
keep it in place most of the time. After my dog decided to push through it
I made a spider web of cord through the stamping holes in the bulkheads
behind it to keep it from falling backwards. I bought a 4x4 sheet at home
depot for about $5 but you could save some money right now by just stealing
an election sign. ;)

I'm looking for ideas on fasteners for the baggage curtain??

Actually I have several ideas but they are proving to be too expensive
or too hard to obtain in reasonable quantities.

thanks
Ken
