Wings/rivet dimples for Mackenzie Stol kit

Oddly I couldn't find this in the archives but near as I can tell there
are 3 rivets on each wing rib that should be dimpled if you think you
might install Angus's STOL kit in the future. On the bottom of the wing
it seems to be the first rivet aft of the most forward stringer. On the
top of the wing, the forward stringer and the rivet forward of that are
fine; the next two rivets forward of that should be dimpled. Angus
hopefully will confirm that but I think that is correct from what I can
see of it on mine. If you don't do this now you may end up
countersinking instead of dimpling and dimpling is definately preferable
in 0.020 parts.

Ken,
I would like to know about the 3 dimpled rivets as well. It probably won't
help for the wing that is already done, but I will be putting the skins on
the second one in the next few days.
Thanks
Jesse

Hi Keith
There are 3 rivets on each leading edge that should be dimpled if you
are ever going to put Angus's leading edge cuff on. If Angus doesn't
describe them or you can't find them in the archives, I'll go check
which ones they are. I am not aware of any other wing mods. FWIW I
think Wray still has his modified version of the wing assembly manual
available on his site. It is better than MAM's. Things are better
ordered so you can save a few steps, his tank section is better, and he
has a few construction tips IIRC.

It's been over a year and finally settled in a

Just getting back to working on my kit and am
starting on the wings. Are
there any mods or improvements I should be aware
of before getting
started? I have tried going through the forum and
haven't found anything.
I have Fifes wing tips and plan on putting Angus's
cuff on when money
Angus.
Anything I should know of before I get started?
Thank you,
Keith

Wings/rivet dimples for Mackenzie Stol kit

IMO, I would never want to countersink 020 in this (or any other situation).
I would consider instead doing some crazy thing like taking the wing tip off
and putting the nail part of a nail dimpling tool on a very long stick to get
it down to where the dimples need to be. (The nail cold even be brazed on to
a metal tag so it wouldn't get bumped off the stick.) An assistant could
help guide the stick and nail to each rivet hole by use of a simple magnetic
compass to see the nail from the outside. The rib flange and 020 skin can be
dimpled simultaneously.

Hi Ben !

An easier crazy thing would be to just put a center punch in the
hole through both skins & give it a couple of taps - instant dimple ! ;-)
It's only 3 holes ...

Doh! But that would be so easy! :)
Just proves again that it is good to bounce ideas around here.
