Spring Gear Leg Bolt

Gil Tessier who is building a Elite in Edmonton told me that a number of
others are constructing a lower saddle under the end bolt that has had some
controversy about stretching and breaking with ugly results! Has any one
researced the idea of installing a 7/16" bolt there instead of the 3/8"?
There seems to be alot of radius left on the end of the leg and I couldn't
fathom a 7/16" bolt failing at that point.

Spring Gear Leg Bolt

Hi Steve !

There was only a problem with one bolt - and it was seriously
over-torqued ! It is important to torque them once, taxi a bit,
then re-torque. The factory warn that you should NOT re-tighten
them later if they are loose, as this likely means they were
stretched by some landing loads - just replace them !

Probably MUCH more important to make sure you have ALL
the factory mods in place - like the reinforcing angle brackets
around the tubes. ..... and all the 'builder mods' as well,
like metal inserts inside the tubes. ;-)

For those who are not in this situation - you can avoid ALL
these worries by just going with the bungee gear ! ;-) :-)
With decent fairings, there's no speed difference, and it IS
about 30+ lbs. lighter..... :-)
