Jesse,

Putting the Droop Tips on the Rebel took me a bit of time, ONLY because
there was no installation instructions at that time. My procedure in
putting the Droop Tips on the Rebel may vary from those of MAM. Overall, I
believe the extra time was well worth it.

Inspection holes are for putting the hinge bolts in. I have my bolt
holding the Tip TE rib secured to the hinge.

We only installed NAV lights on the tips. We put a single strobe on the
Rebels top side.

Hi Jesse !

I think you would have much improved visibility with the wing-tip
strobes. Aeroflash makes a nice combo unit, nav & strobe, with a
streamlined enclosure, for $$$ hundreds less than Whelen. Not quite as
bright, but adequate. The power pak mounts out on the tip end,
on the spar, or end rib bracket. Get alternating flash, or
double-flash, if you can - again, it increases your visibility.
If you get wing tips with quartz halogen landing lights installed,
you can put one on each side, and flash them alternately, as well.
This is REALLY visible a long way !!

Aeroflash have a nice combo unit that includes nav, strobe,
and position lights in one, saving you any wiring to the tail
for the white rear light. Check out the "Experimental" sets -

Having the power out at the tip goes a long way to reducing
radio noise, and you don't have high voltage going past the fuel
either ! As far as getting access for maintenance - you can mount
the tips with captive nuts, or just rivet them, like the factory
does ! You aren't going to have to get in there for YEARS !! :-)

With a strobe on the fuse, you almost have to put it on
the belly, as it will flash in through your skylights and be
distracting or disorienting !! (You definitely want skylights !)
On the belly, it is likely to be damaged easily ...

I agree with everything Bob said except for the riveting of the wing tips.
Screw them on or you'll regret it!

Had a power pack that packed it in at 6 months and glad the tips were
screwed. Also had the same AULA I built, (that had the power pack die) fly a
tad crooked on it's way from Coboconk to my field for repairs. Mice had
carried over 80 lbs of seed up the tail cone, up the flaperon push pull
tubes..thru the fuselage torque tube hole, thru the small "D" of the leading
edge, into the wing tip and back into the leading edge ribs. Seed was piled
higher than the lightening holes for SEVEN bays in. Just can't imagine how
many trips that took and it took me over an hour to vacuum out with a wet
vac and ABS pipe and 90 degree elbows to get in/over all the ribs.

Despite all warnings, I riveted my tips, but I have a large access cover in
the lower skin to allow removal of the flash unit, though the kind of
operation Wayne waged against the mice would be tough. I have the Aeroflash
unit (the combo one with flash, white, and coloured lights), and was
disappointed to find that the coloured lights quit a few weeks after
installation. This turned out to be due to a poor ground connection. They
relay on a piece of braid trapped between the backplate and the cover to
ground the coloured light. Soldering in a solid ground connection fixed
that.

Thanks Al, Bob and Wayne,
I was planning on using the Aeroflash combo units you talk about. I started
considering a fuselage strobe last night and I was looking in the Wicks
catalogue. They have a page in the lighting section that describes FAA
anti-collision lighting requirements. An exposed strobe on each tip like the
Aeroflash one is OK, but the fuselage installation requires one on the top
and bottom. I've seen certified airplanes with just one beacon on the top or
bottom, but anyhow I think I'm sticking with the tip units as you say. Only
problem in considering the MAM droop tips is that they can't be removable. I
had the idea to put a large enough inspection hole near the tip to access
the power supply like Al has done. To take it a step further I could mount
the P.S. ONTO the inside of the inspection cover so the whole thing comes
out easily, like the elevator trim servo. Can someone give me basic
dimensions of the Aeroflash wing tip P.S.? I'm wondering if it would fit,
lying flat on the bottom skin, between the main spar and the first bottom LE
stringer, because my wiring conduit is in the LE section. If I could come up
with a good installation using this idea, then riveting the tips on would be
acceptable and either style of tip could be installed at a later date. I
guess I might need another inspection hole in the tip itself for installing
the outboard flaperon hinge bolt, and I would have to get a hangar cat to
stop those mice, but that's OK because I like cats anyway.

Jesse,

Haven't had any radio noise from the strobe, our avionics guy was pretty good at setting everything up properly. (There is a min. distance to mount strobe from antenna's so as not to get interference.)

Strobe light mounted on the top, chances of being damaged from rocks if located on the bottom is too great.
