All models - Solid Rivets

Post by Bob Patterson » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:29 pm

Hi Rick !

Some people have started - few, if any, have finished ! ;-)

ALL Murphy models were designed for Avex rivets - there is NO
reason to use solid rivets ! Structurally, the skin will tear before
the Avex rivets let go, so, although solids are stronger, and cheaper,
they won't make any difference.

Some people have chosen solids in the mistaken belief that it
will make a stronger airplane - it won't. Some people think it saves
filling the holes in Avex rivets - there's NO need to fill them if
you paint properly, with a HVLP system. I flew a Rebel that was
painted with an old spray system, which left some rivet holes open,
and there were/are no problems today, 15 years of outside storage
later ! The only possible reason for solids is appearance -
some folks think they look better .... But the cost is: much more
work, with 2 skilled people needed to do a good job, more noise,
and a greater chance of having bad rivets to drill out and re-do,
or fail later, and greater difficulty making repairs later.

All things considered - just build it the way it was designed,
and GET IT FLYING !!! :-) :-)

Rick
I agree with Bob, I am using solid rivets in some in areas like the
bottoms and sides on my 50 gal fuel tanks.I like the look of solids but, its
allot slower.
