Rebel - Flaperon control guard

Post by Bob Patterson » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:23 pm

Hi Garry !

I've seen several variations. The one I liked was made of 1/8" Lexan
(my favourite material ! ;-) ). It was bent cold in a brake, and fastened
to the floor and the back bulkhead. The front was bent for stiffness,
and to keep things out, as well.

The beauty of Lexan here is that you can see the parts clearly,
for inspection. It's a VERY good idea to check that the nut in the
center of the bellcrank is torqued correctly, at least a couple of
times a year, as well as lubricating the bearings. The tiniest bit
(like 1/4 - 1/2 turn) of looseness here can cause huge slop in the
ailerons !!

This guard is a good idea - we always have to be very careful
to tie some baggage down in this area, as a barrier, to stop
anything from moving over into the mechanism. A smooth sided
nylon suitcase works well - the bungee must loop around the
case, through the handle on top, pulling inward, away from the
bellcrank & arm !

Has anyone made up and installed a protective panel to ensure junk in
the Rebel baggage area doesn't interfere with the controls? It doesn't
seem likely if cargo is stowed properly but could be a bit uncomfortable
if it ever happened?
