Looking for advice

Hello,

My name is Roger. I live in Eugene, OR USA. I have been 'listening' to this list for about 6 months. I am a low time pilot (ASEL) and would like to build my
own airplane. Not because I'm tired of renting (although I am!),
but because I would LIKE to build and maintain my own aircraft. I am less than three years away from retirement. I have no previous kit building experience,
but I am not unfamiliar with shop skills.

If I may, I would like to ask for advice regarding the Murphy Rebel, and the Rebel Elite, compared to several other similiar kit aircraft.

I have been researching kit aircraft and kit building for two years and have pretty much narrowed my choices to the Murphy Rebel Elite, the BushCaddy
L-160 ( http://www.avitas.ca/ ), the ARV Griffin MkIV ( http:
//www.arvcorp.com/ ), the Zenith Air CH-801 ( http://www.zenithair.com/ ), and the Murphy Rebel, in that order.

My aircraft requirements are that it be of aluminum construction, be capable of carrying at least two 200# adults as well as at least 100# of gear or cargo
(preferably more), and be capable of at least 100 kts cruise at
75% power. Fuel burn would also be a consideration.

I would appreciate any comments and recommendations. I would also appreciate any knowledge or experiences any of you may have had with the non
Murphy kits/companies mentioned above.

Thanks in advance,
Roger

Glad you spoke up, Roger ! You will certainly get lots of OPINIONS !! :-)
I'll have to restrain myself ..... somewhat ! ;-) (I AM just a BIT
biased ! :-) ) My wife & I each own & fly a Rebel, our 2nd and 3rd !

You didn't mention a need for tricycle gear, so I'm wondering why the
Elite is ahead of the Rebel on your list ? Certainly, the Rebel will
EASILY carry the load you desire - heck, we've even flown a 330 pounder
in our 912-powered Rebel ...., and cruise with 80 hp. is 97 mph....,
but it DOES burn 3 gallons per hour ! ;-) There are at least FIVE
Rebels near here with 4 seats - and they DO fly with 4 adults aboard !
Several of these have Lycoming O-235's - 108 to 118 hp., which cruise
at about 110 to 118 mph. on about 5 1/2 gallons/hr. - the O-320's are
faster, at 120 to 127 mph on wheels, burning more fuel ...
(I seem to recall one baggage area placard saying "365 lb. max." ) !
Of course, there is also room in the fuselage to spread out 2 sleeping
bags in the back, for camping.

The only Bush Caddy's I've seen had 912's, although I understand you
can use larger engines. The one at the Toronto Aviation Show seemed much
smaller than the Rebel, more of a stretched ultralight... There are about
30 of them flying. (we're almost up to 700 Rebels, and over 600 Renegades,
100 Mavericks, 80 Super Rebels .... )

I had a customer here who had a demo in the Rebel, then flew out west
to try the Griffin - he came back disgusted ! Couldn't get a demo, nobody
could give him a firm price, OR a delivery time, or a list of builders ..
Likely just a bad day at the factory .... Dave Marsden is a very
experienced & knowledgable engineer with years of experience in gliders.
The tapered wing on the ARV is undoubtedly very efficient, but likely
more difficult to build than the straight wing on the Rebel, as well as
more expensive to manufacture. I suspect that the Griffin, with a 150 hp
Lycoming, would be a fair bit faster than a Rebel. I don't think one has
ever flown with that large an engine, and I don't know how many are flying,
but I suspect there are fewer ARV's than Bush Caddys ....

There are 2 Zenair 801's flying, that I know of. There doesn't seem
to be a baggage compartment, as they talk about adding a belly pod, but
you could just use the back seat, I suppose. Based on the factory specs,
even a standard Rebel will be a fair bit (10 -20 mph) faster in cruise,
depending on the engine used in the 801. They seem to prefer the 180 hp.
Lycoming O-360 engine.

You didn't mention floats - the Rebel has been well proven on straight
and amphib floats, and the Elite on amphibs, and the float kits are available
from Murphy. I have seen photos of the Bush Caddy on floats (don't know who's
float design), but as far as I know, the ARV and the 801 have not ever
been on floats, at this time - it may be planned for the future....

As I said, I'm VERY prejudiced, but, from helping the Rebel Builders
Group here with over 100 Rebels, and hearing their feedback, I'd have to
repeat their words; " The Rebel, with 150 hp., is THE best floatplane in
the world ! " (of course, they are a BIT prejudiced, too ! ;-) )

Best of luck with your decision - if you DO decide on a Rebel, there
is a WEALTH of experience in this group, available to you through this
mail list !! We'll all do our best to help you along,
'Toward the Flightline' !

Sorry, guys - I just couldn't resist the opportunity !! :-)

Bob, to be specific, My baggage compartment placard reads "max. baggage
and/or passengers 375lb @ 42" aft of datum, Weight and Balance
considerations required!" And this does not put the c of g out the aft
limit! And yes the placard, and more so the fact that these numbers are true
and legal, sure opens some eyes!!!!!

Roger, I am based at 4SD, Stead Field Reno, Nevada. And I have just
started my Elete. I am building it in my hangar here and would welcome
visitors at any time. If you would like to take a trip over or fly over I
would be glad to show you a complete kit that has not been assembled yet.
(I am just half way throught the Holizontal stab.) If you want to give me a
call at 775-972-5227 or use the e-mail to make housing arrangements. I have
room on my couch for one person! I set my own working hours pretty much, so
that any days would be fine. That also goes for anyone else who might be
interested in see a complete kit hanging on the walls.
There are two Super Rebels being built here and one fellow has a 701 that
he just finished. If you were interested.

Roger, it's me again Doug Reno. Just some food for thought. I am building
the Elete because of the ability to go to 180 HP. My flying will be almost
all back country high desert. I takeoff at 5000ft and go up from there.
nuff said.

Howdy Roger & Alice, Sam and Sandi Archer here. We are building a Murphy
"Elite" and a just a bit prejudiced. We think this is the greatest of all
Murphy designs. We have enjoyed the luxury of flying both the Rebel and the
"Elite" and have found that to our satisfaction the "Elite" is the greatest.
We along with several other builders are building as a tailwheel aircraft as
well as a tricycle geared plane. We plan to fly the time off with a trike,
but at any time we can quite easily convert it to a tailwheel (can't be done
in a Rebel)We also have ordered a O360 Lycoming for it ( max in a Rebel is
O320). There are other reasons why we chose this model and would be happy to
show you and your wife or any one our project. We are only about 3 hours and
19 minutes North of Eugene in Kelso, Wa. If I remember correctly when I used
to drive it alot it is 156 miles from the Oakmont Shopping Center or Valley
River. Our Phone is Area code 360-425-7777 Our e-mail is sas@toledotel.com
Oh yes we did go on a tour of the Zenair factory in Mexico, Mo. and are sure
that we made the right decision on the "Elite" and especially the Murphy
company. This is our first Kit building project and with all of the help
that we have gotten from other builders and once again from Murphy we think
that this is the most fun thing that we could ever do together. We have
Cessna 172 that we fly so we don't put as many hours in our project as we
should. At this time we have the wings on the plane and are working on the
controls. Our panel is finished (instruments in and wired) in our house. It
is quite a project but I think it will be well worth all of the fun and
work. Well I think that I have rattled enough. Just call us send us a
personal E-Mail and we will give you the directions to our shop. Sam and

Subject: Looking for advice

Hello,

My name is Roger. I live in Eugene, OR USA. I have been 'listening' to
this list for about 6 months. I am a low time pilot (ASEL) and would like to
build my
own airplane. Not because I'm tired of renting (although I am!),
but because I would LIKE to build and maintain my own aircraft. I am less
than three years away from retirement. I have no previous kit building
experience,
but I am not unfamiliar with shop skills.

If I may, I would like to ask for advice regarding the Murphy Rebel, and
the Rebel Elite, compared to several other similiar kit aircraft.
I have been researching kit aircraft and kit building for two years and
have pretty much narrowed my choices to the Murphy Rebel Elite, the
BushCaddy
L-160 ( http://www.avitas.ca/ ), the ARV Griffin MkIV ( http:
file://www.arvcorp.com/ ), the Zenith Air CH-801
http://www.zenithair.com/ ), and the Murphy Rebel, in that order.
My aircraft requirements are that it be of aluminum construction, be
capable of carrying at least two 200# adults as well as at least 100# of
gear or cargo
(preferably more), and be capable of at least 100 kts cruise at
75% power. Fuel burn would also be a consideration.

I would appreciate any comments and recommendations. I would also
appreciate any knowledge or experiences any of you may have had with the non
Murphy kits/companies mentioned above.

Thanks in advance,
Roger
