All, I have since resent pictures to Bill and a few others that have asked.
So I don't have to do that anymore we have added the pictures to our Website
(www.irishfield.on.ca) in the product section. Like I stated before, I don't
care if you make your own, feel free to use the pic's to make them up
yourself, but if you have to buy the aluminum for it, you probably won't
save any money! We now also have approximately 1000 line items of our
inventory On-Line (this represents about 9% of what we have and are working
towards all of it being on-line in the near future) Blue Skies, Wayne

Allister, Just the .063 plates, which seem to do the job of transfering the
loads into the witches hats etc. to keep things from buckling. We also
reinforce the side walls below the "bathtub" fitting for the top mount
bolts, using a piece of stringer material along the doubler rivet row from
the firewall to the side panels witches hat. We have pounded the he-- out of
two Rebels for more than 3 years with these plates installed.(one on floats
and one on wheels) and have seen absolutely no movement of the firewall. I
have seen alot of nose slap wheel landings on the amphib Rebel, that by now
without reinforcing would have seen the engine lying on the ground!

I guess if you wanted to be absolutely bullet proof, you could do both the
plates and the channel. I would like to mention to those going the channel
route however, that the channel won't do you any good if you don't use 3
pieces(not the 2 suggested by Murphy). A long and a short piece on the
inside of the firewall, from the edges of the witches hat to each "bath tub"
fitting. Then the 3rd piece on the engine side to overlap these 2 and tie
them together. The pieces on the inside must be jammed tight against the
"bathtub" fittings or else the firewall will just buckle in the gap you
leave! (better yet,if you are doing while building, would be to put the
channel totally under the fitting, between the fitting and the firewall with
the mount bolt going though it to sandwich and tie everything together!)

Uuuh just to prove someone is paying attention - that double rivet row would be
another mod I presume. Two rows of rivets along the bottom of the doubler ?

It's a pandora's box. Bet you can't just make ONE mod. Now we're having fun eh!

Ken, not sure what double row of rivets you are talking about! I did forget
in my e-mail to Allister yesterday, that I build every aircraft, no matter
what engine goes on, with a double "stagered" row of rivets up the door
post. If you are talking about the line of rivets going around the perimeter
of the firewall, this firewall was done by the previous owner with a sheet
of stainless riveted over top of the original aluminum. And YES you are
right this aircraft and its Mods are like Lays Potato Chips!(you can't have
just one) In my case thats true for both the Mods and the number of Rebels!
My #1 personal Rebel has aluminum flaperons(counter balanced), flaps on the
floor(totally mechanically linked to get rid of the play and flex of
teleflex cable), 4 fully adjustable seats, etc. etc. etc. Over time though,
most of these novelties wear off and you will wish you had of just built it
by the book and been enjoying the flight characteristics of the craft, that
much sooner. If I may be Bold, one mod I absolutely hate is Electric Flaps!
Couldn't stand them in a newer model Cessna, can't stand them in a Rebel. No
two landings are ever the same with electric flaps because you can't get the
same position at the swing of a lever! This is the main reason 185 Cessna's
are the prefered Cessna on floats, because of their manual flaps! Sorry if I
offended anyone with this mod already completed, but I watch a gentleman
with this Mod in his Rebel, spend most of his flight time playing with his
Electric flap switch, trying to get them in the right place!(and not flying
the aircraft!)

Hi Wayne
Finally getting back into building # 220. I used the 3 piece channel as you
described and I think I will add a piece from the witch's hat to the fire wall.I
also installed an "X" Shaped brace made of 3/4" .035 4130 tubing. One end is
sandwiched between the top "bathtub" fitting and the firewall and the other is
bolted through 2 rivet holes in the top carrythrough gusset(Fus 1).They are
joined and welded where they meet in the centre. This was done at the suggestion
of Everet Makela who installed this brace in the Russian Radial powered Super
Rebel pictured in the most recent edition of the Recreational Flyer. His feeling
is that this combats the twisting moments encountered on floats in rough water
particularly when the majority of the weight is being supported by the wings.I
am sure that this would alsoassist in preventing the firewall from buckling.
Happy Building and Flying
Dale
My engine mount has a solid steel tube brace between the two bottom mounts. Hope
this can be of help to someone.

Thanks for the useful tips, Dale !

There were many helpful suggestions at the last Rebel Builders meeting,
especially from Carmon Titus, who now has over 800 hours on amphibs on
his Rebel, with a few mods, and NO problems !!! Some meeting are REALLY
valuable - we try to make them ALL interesting ...

I know it's a little too far for you to come, Dale, but we DID have
people fly in from Michigan for the last meeting .... I sure hate to see
local (Southern Ontario) builders missing out on these gems !!! :-)
=====
Ya gotta BE there !!! :-)

Well Wayne, you finally got me to respond to your ideas.I must admit that
your knowledge of repair and building are usually the same as what I would do
or have done, so my response is not needed. But about the flaps. The system
that Bill and I used in 97MR is simple and accurate. The full extention of
the unit gives us 21 of down. Every time. The micro switch gives us neutral.
Every time. The full retraction gives us 9 up. Every time. A very simple
cable to a springloaded sliding indicator gives us accurate in between
selection. A tap on the switch and the bleeding off of flaps is as slow as
you want it to be. Hold the switch and from full flaps to neutral is 1.5
second. AND it weighs less than the telflex system. Do I have to play with
it while flying? No, a quick glance at my indicator tells me where the flaps
are. Would I do it again? You bet! The drawback? Well I must admit, your
flap deployment system will still work with an electrical failure, and if
mine failed it would be stuck in that position.
Well that's my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions and
some body parts. Everybody has them. Keep at it , It''s worth it Curt

Curt, glad your flap system works for you and YOU are happy with it! That is
all that matters! Are you able to select settings between Zero and Full
flaps exactly every time?(I rarely land full flaps) Is your indicator
electric or mechanical. The main problem with Howards is that he used a mac
sender and indicator. The longest sending unit they sell did not have the
necessary 1 13/16" stroke, so Howard used a spring (attached to the sender)
to allow enough travel of the mixer unit after the sender bottoms out.
Leaves him guessing where the flaps are after full stoke of the sender and
as the spring changes lengths(stretches) it changes the needle position on
the Mac indicator, so neutral never seems to be in the same place!(Bob P.
knows, he has flown it!) This leaves him to constantly play with the switch
staring at the wing tips, trying to get the flaperons even with the tips
trailing edges and unfortunately a quick tap of the switch usually moves
them too far! Also the car seat mover that he used as a drive for the
system sure weighs more than the teleflex cable system and even my complete
mechanical "Johnson bar" style flap system and linkages for that matter!
Anyhow, thanks for the slap in the face, I probably deserved it!

Wayne

Well Wayne, you finally got me to respond to your ideas.I must admit that
your knowledge of repair and building are usually the same as what I would
do
or have done, so my response is not needed. But about the flaps. The system
that Bill and I used in 97MR is simple and accurate. The full extention of
the unit gives us 21 of down. Every time. The micro switch gives us
neutral.
Do I have to play
with
it while flying? No, a quick glance at my indicator tells me where the
flaps
are. Would I do it again? You bet! The drawback? Well I must admit, your
flap deployment system will still work with an electrical failure, and if
mine failed it would be stuck in that position.
Well that's my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions
and
some body parts. Everybody has them. Keep at it , It''s worth it Curt

FIREWALL PICTURES

Hi Wayne,
Boy my letter writing skills really showed on that one!!
I sure didn't mean to sound like a slap! I was just expressing my
opinion, and that's what the body part comment was about. My opinion.
Enough of that.
What I used for my indicator is a 1/16 cable attached to the flap arm
that goes through a nylon sleeve up over the top of the door. It is attached
to a delrin slide block (it was originally for the door latch ). I then
loaded it in a slide tube and used a small spring that's always under
compression fastened it to the top of the door opening, that is to say, on
top of the door former. The indicator is a small bolt that protrudes through
the sliding block and out the door former. I then cut a small L channel,
slotted it, and slid it over the bolt I then ran the system up and down ,
marking the degrees that seemed most appropriate. I think the travel is
about 1 1/2 inch. It's easy to see, and seems to work well so far.
Please keep up the responses, I do enjoy them.
Keep at it , it's worth it. Curt N97MR

Curt, my wife says I need a good slap once in a while anyway! We all get
protective of out "great" ideas and get a little punchy from time to time. I
wasn't going after you, I was just putting myself, back in my place! Like I
always say, it is only the owner that has to be happy with his plane and
it's individualisum(if thats a word)
