G'day

Help please.


1. I am unsure as to the alignment of the elevator horns, and the manual
is not particularly clear. Could some one please assist?

2. I am now marking out the left elevator, in preparation for cutting
the skin, in order to fit the trim. However I have found that using the
measurements given by the factory, the cut runs through a rivet hole.
Would it be satisfactory to move the cuts by say 1/8 to 3/16 to give the
proper edge clearance?

Ian; I have not noticed any answers to your question. I did my elevators
about seven years ago so I am a bit hesitant to give advise. However,
complete ignorance has never stopped me in the past. Move the cuts. You
will find that you will be making a lot of these types of decisions as you
build your Murphy. As an aside, the trim could probably be half the size it
is and still do the job.

Hi Ian

I agree completely with Lonnie. I also did my elevator about 6 years ago &
do not rememeber all the details. It was not as well documeneted in my view
as the rest of the manual & struggled with trying to make it exactly
according to plans. You have to use alot of plain common sense to make it
work for you. As Lonnie says, move the cuts so that you always maintain the
minimum edge clearance.

I have go about 80 some hours on this great airplane. I remember I felt
that I needed the trim at one time, but do not recall the actual loading
conditions. It is not like a 172 where it is best to trim for takeoff and
then retrim on a 65 KIAS final. If I did it all over again, I would leave
the trim off. It can be added later if you need it. Just route the wiring
through. The trim was a lot of aggravation for very little useful benefit.
That's my opinion anyway.

Don't sweat the small stuff and keep building is my best advice. Just build
it safe.

i have 65 hours on #376, and i have found that I have very little use for the
trim. If I were to do it again, I would either eliminate it or it manual.
