Gas struts

Hi All
I have decided to change my dors to gull wing . I know nothing about gas
struts . Does anyone know how strong a strut is required?

hi dale

you need a surprising amount of force to lift the doors so they need to be
made light
I used 2 gas struts on each door, each strut has 15 lbs, if you use one
strut you need at least a 30 lbs strut
also the strut location when mounted is critical for proper function
also the strut should be mounted with body side up, it makes difference
according to manufacturer
suppliers are not that easy to find, also finding the force of the strut can
be problem usnless it is marked on the strut or you take it home and measure
it

On my Moose the doors use a 90 PSI strut. The door is probably a lot heavier
than a standard Moose or a Rebel door though. We upped the skin thickness
and have an interior on the door.

We bought all our door hardware from http://www.austinhardware.com/

I know of a Moose that has well over $3000 in just door and window hardware
(all certified stuff for Beavers). We have essentially the same set up for
well under $100.

Dale, you've probably been looking at others but it is a good idea to mount
the gas spring (or springs) so that they go over center as the door closes
then the piston holds the door closed. We only used one on the forward side
on the Moose because passengers would want to use the aft one as a grab

I found Napa to have gas struts in there big catalog. There is a whole page on them with lengths, pounds, etc. I am starting out with a single 20 pound for my gull wing windows, I had to start somewhere. The door will still be conventional hinged.

when i did my gull wing doors i had engineer at company i used do
calculations with special program they use to show the opening and closing
positions, mounting points, forces in hot & cold weather and for rebel door
they calculated for single strut 30 lbs was needed, you can try 20 but i bet
you will need 30 lbs

also the mounting points are critical, dont recall now but could look them
up for you, of course if you have different length strut then me your
mounting points will be different

It's just the window hooked to the strut and it doesn't have to open the window, just hold it open. I'll have the test strut in a couple days and see what happens, got to start somewhere.
