Rebel: Bottom fin hinge bracket

G'day

Now here is my problem!

When doing a pre-flight check I have noticed that the bottom hinge fin
bracket has some slackness in it.

I guess that all I have to do is tighten the two attach bolts, but just how
do I get in there do that?

Does anyone have any good ideas?

Ian Donaldson

How it got loose would be my first question. Did your tail spring come up so
hard that it bent it up?

How to get in there's a very good question...without a LOT of work! One
suggestion would be to unibit a hole into the FUS-49 tail spring attach
bulkhead, beside the bolt fitting, that you can get a 3/8" socket and 1/4"
ratchet extension thru and onto the nuts.

G'day Wayne

You are up early (or is it late?)

How it got loose would be my first question. Did your tail spring come up

hard that it bent it up?
No. That does not appear to be the case. I can see no reason for it to be
loose. Maybe just one of those things!

One suggestion would be to unibit a hole into the FUS-49 tail spring attach
bulkhead.

OK. That seems to be a good way. Not easy, but perhaps it can be done. I
guess that if I get someone
with small hands they would be able to work in there. Would I need to put a
doubler back over the hole that I drilled in the bulkhead?

Thanks and regards

7:30 PM Ian......If you keep the hole just large enough to squeeze the
socket and 1/4 drive through and keep it up from the bottom away from the
bulkhead flanges you should be fine leaving it as is. Make sure you have a
tight fit on the socket so you don't lose it!! Not a fun place to work, but
if you remember I built and installed a solid bathtub fitting in there on
mine to replace the inadequate old multi strap bolt retention. If I could
drill and worse - rivet it in place...there should be no problem getting one
hole and a 1/4 ratchet in there.

G'day again Wayne

It is just about 12.00 noon here on a beautiful bright day. Temperature is
30oc with 35oc expected which is probably a bit different from yours!

Make sure you have a tight fit on the socket so you don't lose it!!

Maybe I will weld the socket onto the extension shaft!

I built and installed a solid bathtub fitting in there on mine to replace
the inadequate old multi strap bolt retention. If I could drill and worse -
rivet it in place...there should be no problem getting one hole and a 1/4
ratchet in there.

Mmmm! That would be a job that I would not like to do! Unfortunately I have
hands of King Kong proportions, so I will have to get some assistance to do
the job. I wonder if I could convince my wife...........

thanks again

G'day again.

I have just had another thought on a way to do this.

What about I drill a hole in the horizontal surface of FUS 31 close to the
rudder spar and go down vertically?
I could weld an open ended spanner onto a length of rod and capture the nut
that way.

Do you recall the size of the attach bolts? I think that they are 1/4". I
would like to manufacture the necessary tools here at home as the plane is
20 miles away and there is no workshop facilities.

Thanks again

That was going to be my first suggestion...but I figured it's a tad tight to
get in there under the fin where it's just over 2" wide. Could be done I'm
sure with an angle drill...as long as you have my SB'd doubler there and you
get the hole centered and away from the fin post. Nuts are 3/8" for the 3/16
bolts.

Hi Ian
I left an access hole there for inspection and such. As I recall it is
about 2" fore and aft by about an inch wide at the front and triangular
shaped with generously rounded corners. It would be tight but I'll try
to remember to look tomorrow and see if it looks doable.

G'day Ian !

Do you remember what I did on our Rebel elevators and rudder pivot bolts ?

I put "removable doors" over them - with a perspex inspection hole / viewing window as well - so you can SEE the "hidden " bolts with a torch .... and remove the cover to get easy access to the bolts

I'll try & find a pic (if I have one that shows what I'm talking about) & send it to you direct

Rick

PS ...... Just been looking - now "window / inspection cover" photos :o(

I'll try & remember to take some - next time out at the Rebel

Hi Ian

I gave you the wrong dimensions. My access hole is about an inch wide at
the front and a bit over 2" long. I can't see the bolts without a mirror
because the fin is in the way but there is adequate room to slide a box
wrench in. Yes you'd need to weld an extension on it. I'd use a thin
extension maybe 3/32 by 1/2" so that I could bend it forward or snip it
to the right length to clear the fin.

There is about 3" of clearance under the fin so a right angle die
grinder or dremel attachment would be handy for making the access hole.
I think this is the way I'd do it as there sure isn't much spare room
around that bathtub fitting to drill a hole and insert a socket.

G'day Ken

Thanks for that information. I think that this is the way that I will go
with it.

I will make up an extension, maybe by welding a socket onto a 1/4" rod and
that way I will be able to bend it to suit.

I will let you know how this all comes out!

Thanks again and regards
