strobe kits

Just finished writing Great Plains and Aeroflash on the subject. I may go
with the kit as I have someone who can make it and if I do we'll make the
mount etc. if I can't find one. Aeroflash does make nav/strobe kits for
Ultralights, likely more expensive as they are complete with power supply,
but in addition probably more weight than I need.

Also ordered an exhaust kit from Terry and can't wait to install it. If it's
a good fit, the price was sure right. Let you know how I make out.

Subject: strobe kits

It does take a bit of electronics skill to build these kits - if
you're
not up to it, you might be able to find someone nearby who could ....

Once you see the kit setup, you will have a better idea of what might
be
needed to mount it - I haven't seen one myself ...

Generally, you will need a glass or plastic lens that covers the
strobe
light, streamlines it, and keeps the rain out. The mounting could be as
simple a a piece of aluminum bolted onto the end of the spar at the tip,
bent to allow the light to protrude through the wing tip.

It is a good idea to run the wires inside a plastic tube, either
rigid PVC water pipe, or flexible fuel line. Since your Rebel is finished,
your only hope is to push this tube inside the front section of the wing,
in the small D-tube. This isn't the preferred place for it, if you are
building, but it is now your only option, unless you remove the wing skins
!
Not toooo likely !! :-) :-)

If building, it is also better to run the wires down inside the wing
strut, as this brings them into the bottom of the cockpit, where they can
be tidily routed to the back of the panel for power. You will have to bring
them in at the top, and run them up over the 'cage' assembly, and down to
the panel - they are hard to hide here .....

Thanks for the info Wayne. By the way, I looked at the strobe kits by
Great
Plains that Bop Patterson suggested and then looked at Aeroflash site for
lenses and mounts, but I have no idea what to look for and they have tons

stuff.
Bob if you can help once again!!!

Many thanks, Bob, Wayne etc.

Aurele, you most likely will not have a problem with your firewall as you
are running the 912 at less than half the weight of most O-320 lycoming
set
ups. The momentum of the heavier engines wanting to continue in the down
plane after a hard landing causes the top motor mounts to pull together,
buckling the firewall. The need for firewall reinforcing has been stated
by
myself for over 4 years and by others previously only to be ignored by
the
powers to be! It wasn't until 2 aircraft where damaged in front of the
"world" (OSHKOSH) that the bulletin went out and unfortunately not to all
the builders! I combated this problem with .063 reinforcing plates for
the
firewall, when I rebuilt a customers aircraft in 96, which join the mount
bolt area into the witches hats to significantly stiffen the firewall and
transfer the loads. I sell the set for $100cdn (3 plates - 2 triangular
plates c/w 90* brake for the top mounts and a 3rd flat plate that joins
the
2 lower mount bolts together) Not sure what Murphy charges for the
materials
to do the fix and both our methods have advantages and disadvantages
depending on whether your aircraft is already flying or being built. But
like I said I don't think you need it personally with the 912 and if you
decide some day to change to a lycoming or suburu you could do the
reinforcing when you have the engine off!

Bob, I should probably have a look at that bulletin if it pertains to
floats
and given that I have an older rebel. Can you send me a copy.

Thanks, Aurele Lavigne
