Interesting, another MT Beta problem. The MT guys in Germany had a
conniption fit when they saw our postings about Les's MT in Alaska going
into reverse. They actually sent a nasty gram off list to a member. Screw
them - whether it is actually going into "reverse" or just going flat as
they claim, you're still just as dead either way.

Guys,
Just thought I would pass this e-mail along that I received from Larry a
while ago. I has to do govenor. I am glad he wasn't in the air!! read
below.......He has his Moose for sale if there is any interest you can
contact
Larry at ljnagy@axion.net

Bob....Was glad to hear that you have started building.... the new , pre
punched kits certainly do cut a few hours off the building time....You did
the right thing buying that engine, they will not get any cheaper . I should

mention that on mine, I installed the composite , 3-blade ,MT prop, with
which I am very pleased. I also had a new prop govenor with reverse pitch
control. During run up, it locked into coarse pitch and refused to respond.
It was defective from the factory and luckily , I still had the original
,new
standard govenor that came with the engine. That is the one I'm flying with
now and it works very well...don't know if you seen that artical on the
Moose
that crash landed in the parking lot in Anchorage last fall, but apparently,

his prop went into coarse pitch on final and I too would like to know
why !! I love my Moose but there comes a time when it's time to get out of

the lodge business and do something else..I have the tail feather kit for an

RV-7 in my workshop so if the Moose sells, I will probably start on it or
maybe an RV-10 ??? Larry

Don't know much about the MT prop but with my NSI CAP beta prop there are
spring pins that engage over 2000RPM (engine speed about 1000 prop RPM) that
prevent it going finer than takeoff pitch. One thing I have found out with my
prop is that the control buttons on the stick are very sensitive and even you
or the co-pilot rest a map on the buttons it can change the pitch unexpectly.
I would caution anyone with a cap prop to be thoroughly aware of how it works
and any idiosyncrasies. Going into flat pitch while flying for any reason is
not acceptable and in my opinion is a design flaw.

I don't know anything about the MT prop specifically although I do have
thousands of hours on reversable turboprops, but it sounds like you guys are
talking about two separate problems. Larry describes his prop locking in
coarse pitch, which refers to high blade angle ie feather. That would not
drop you out of the sky like what happened to Les. That does sound like a
case of uncommanded beta.
