PreKote

Britt recommended the PreKote to me. It worked well. Cost is about a wash
with the etch and alodine but it is less steps and you can hose it down the
driveway. I used just under two gallons on the entire airplane.

Mike, no, I used the PPG DP primers.

Okay Britt I just updated my painting pictures. Still don't have one with
the cowls all on.

What's the consensus for paint prep? For painting the interior is it
necessary to do the metal prep procedure or just a skotchbrite and laquer
wash? I definately will do the prep wash on the exterior.

No salt water, live between lake MI and lake Superior. I guess instead of
installing some sort of fabric interior I decided to paint.

PreKote

Hi Jean,

I used PreKote prior to painting my Rebel. The wings were painted early
summer 2006. The fuselage was painted late summer 2006. It's been flying
since June 2007 with approximately 55 hours tach time so far and the paint
is still attached.

I applied the PreKote per the instructions. I found that after the final
rinse there was a fine aluminum residue remaining on the surface which
didn't rinse off. At least it didn't rinse off with garden hose/city tap
water pressures. To get this residue off I would wash the surface with
PolyFiber 310 Alkaline Detergent Cleaner and rinse again. This would leave
the surface clean and 'bead free'. Washing with the PolyFiber alkaline
detergent is not part of the application instructions for the PreKote, but
I did it anyway to get the residue off.

I'm not convinced the PreKote itself really does anything. Their literature
indicates that the etching of the metal is done by scrubbing the metal
surface with maroon Scotchbrite pads and that the PreKote leaves a coating
that helps the paint coat adhere. Personally, I think the paint adheres to
the surface because it has been etched (roughened) by use of the
Scotchbrite pad.

So far I am happy with the results, but only time will tell. It was
certainly easier (and safer) than acid etching and alodine, IMO.

I used all Poly Fiber paint products throughout. EP420/430 Epoxy Primer
followed by Poly Fiber Aerothane color coats.

Hope this helps,

Roger Hoffman
Eugene, OR USA!
