The Murphy Builders Site

I was trying to trial install my main gear before getting it powder coated and found that the gear leg is slightly wider than the slot in the clamp preventing me from getting it through the clamp and attach bracket. I can't decide whether to sand down the gear leg or open up the bracket and clamp. I am also unclear how much clearance the powder coating will take up. Any suggestions/ideas? Also are people painting the brake calipers/mounting bracked/wheels or getting them anodized or powder coated or just leaving them unfinished?

Hi Mike I can't help with your clearance issues and don't know what others
are doing but I wonder if powder coating is a good finish for something
that flexes like a gear leg. I can imagine the powdercoat cracking and
falling off after just a few landings.

I will do some more research but my understanding is that powder coating is
better able to handle flexing than most paints.

I filed my gear leg to fit. I know Steve had his machined to fit. I ended
up filing a little off the bracket also.
Haven't tried to put them in yet after paint...

Not sure if this is applicable ... but the new Elite gear legs I bought came
with squared off edges at the saddle area. They had to be filed to a round
edge to fit cleanly into the saddles brackets. No work to the saddles
brackets was required or done.

I think you must be talking about a Super Rebel/Moose. I had my gear legs
powder coated, then I had to file the powder coating off down to the steel,
then continued to file a fair amount of metal off of the gear legs before
they would fit in the aluminum brackets. I don't like the looks of the
aluminum brackets to begin with and I wouldn't even think about removing any
metal from them. I plan to add a coat of cold anodizing (sprays on just
like primer) where it's filed before final installation unless someone
thinks regular primer would be better.
