Carby heat- Renegade

G'day

Some advice please.

One of my friends has recently acquired a damaged Renegade and it is fitted
with a Rotax 912 80hp engine.

His question is does he need carby heat. There was none fitted and he is a
little concerned about not having it.

Regards

Ian, I have never had carb heat on my installation and the plane has been
flying for 10 + years now in all sorts of conditions, have never had any
problems.

Once I install my airbox and draw outside air, I do plan to add carb heat ,
the logic being that this air is much cooler as opposed to drawing from the
intakes at the rear of the engine.

Just my .02 cents, CDN.

Aurele

Carby heat- Renegade

Hi Ian !

I'll second Aurele's remarks ! The original Rebel had no carb
heat, and is still flying happily, over 15 years later. I flew a
Renegade without carb heat, as well, and it's still flying, after
at least 15 years ....

If your Aviation Authority requires it, welllll, better fit
one, otherwise, there's little risk.

G'day Bob & Aurele

Thanks for your comments and I willpass them on to my friend. I'm sure that
this will allay his fears somewhat.

Under our experimental rules carb heat is not a requirement.

I did not have carb heat on my Rotax 912 powered Renegade. I flew in cold
conditions, in clouds (don't tell anybody) and I once flew through the
pouring rain (ouch, those 60 mph raindrops sting!). It wasn't a white one
with blue trim was it? Reg # 28-0840 or 0940 from a picture I have. Don't
have my logbook with me to check. I'd hate to think my poor Renegade got
damaged.

Carby heat- Renegade

G'day Mike.

That's the sort of news the my friend will like to hear. The carby heat
mechanism was all smashed when the aircraft was damaged and he does not want
to rebuild it unless he absolutely has to.

And no, the aircraft that was damaged was not your old one! This one was
built by the past owner about 8 years ago and was flying just fine until he
landed into the sun, misjudged the runway and touched town in long grass at
the side of the strip. This caused the Renegade to flip onto its back. The
owner immediately lost interest in it and it sat for 2 years until he sold
it to my friend who is now rebuilding it. With some luck it will be flying
again in a few months.
