Stabilizer Mod

I am installing the stabilizer mod. In the drawings it looks like the
stainless reinforcement (ST1008) replaces two aluminium pieces, one
aluminium angle and a small block. Both of these pieces are through-bolted
to the hinges. Is this right?

Mike,
I am assuming this is a 3500 stab that has the rear spar doublers that do
not extend out to the outboard hinges. If so, you have a .080 doubler under
the outboard hinge that is on the aft side of the spare (part # ST-405 in
the 3500 upgrade manual stab section). If this is the small block you are
referring to it must stay. The only thing they have you remove is to cut
off the flange of the outboard rib that picks up the spare (and the hinge
bolts did go through it). Then the Stainless part ST1008 goes in. However
I found it wasn't necessary to cut anything out if you don't want to. There
was room to slip the ST1008 inside of everything and still have edge
distance for the bolts. So on mine it goes - hinge bracket, .080 square
spacer, stab spar, original outboard rib flange, new st1008 with the bolts
going through all of it.

The instruction can be misleading as they do not show the aluminum spacer,
part ST-405, because they are showing a later model 3500 that now have the
rear spar doublers go full length. So there is no need for the spacer under
the hinge on the spar side of those.

Looking at Mikes pictures he did cut off the flange on the tip rib(per
instructions)and he has the full length doublers in the spar so no spacer
like you must have. All Mikes other doublers are good stuff for the sea
fins if installing.

Clear as mud.

Stabilizer Mod

Thanks Scott. I have a fast build stabilizer that was delivered this
summer. The rib has no flange on the spar end. Instead there is a piece of
angle (probably 2" angle) that gets riveted to the rib and then the backside
of the spar. The hinge bolts go through the hinges then the spar then this
angle. There is also a little block that goes inside the angle and has two
of the four hinge bolts through it, presumably so that the bolt heads don't
interfere with the radius on the inside of the angle. It would be nice if
the pictures and drawings showed all the parts!

Mike, Okay, I get it now. You have the "First" stab tip modification
already installed by the factory that Brian said was going to be the
"official mod" and then was changed to the stainless one that is now
published. He sent me pictures once before it was announced and it is as
you describe. In Brian's opinion it was better than what you are changing
to. I suspect you are correct that the inner little block was for bolt head
interference. They mention filing the washers now to not interfere with the
radius I believe.
Sorry for the confusion.

Stabilizer Mod

Wow, now I have to think! The mod currently installed looks pretty clean.
It picks up the rib over less area than the SS plate mod, but that is the
only advantage that I can see for the SS plate mod. It picks up the spar
over more area (all four bolts) than the SS plate mod. Where was the
cracking that led to the mods in the first place? I just ordered the
upgraded rib and the sea fins today so I have some time before I can do
anything.

Stabilizer Mod

Not really sure what angle and block you're talking about... originally the
flange on the tip rib was all there was, now they're using the stainless
piece with the flange, and a tip rib with no flange.

Thanks Mike! I couldn't see them but could you confirm that the angle and
block that the hinges bolt to (they are on the other side of the spar
(inside the stabilizer) are deleted?

I am installing the stabilizer mod. In the drawings it looks like the
stainless reinforcement (ST1008) replaces two aluminium pieces, one
aluminium angle and a small block. Both of these pieces are
through-bolted
to the hinges. Is this right?

Stabilizer Mod

Actually I've got the .080" spacer on mine... it's just hard to see in the
photos. I had already built the rear spar before I heard they were making
the doublers full length.

Stabilizer Mod

The cracking was at the bend of the rib flange at the rear spar.

I just ordered the
upgraded rib and the sea fins today so I have some time before I can do
anything.

Mike, Okay, I get it now. You have the "First" stab tip modification
already installed by the factory that Brian said was going to be the
"official mod" and then was changed to the stainless one that is now
published. He sent me pictures once before it was announced and it is as
you describe. In Brian's opinion it was better than what you are
changing
to. I suspect you are correct that the inner little block was for bolt
head
interference. They mention filing the washers now to not interfere with
the
radius I believe.
Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks Scott. I have a fast build stabilizer that was delivered this
summer. The rib has no flange on the spar end. Instead there is a piece
of

angle (probably 2" angle) that gets riveted to the rib and then the
backside

of the spar. The hinge bolts go through the hinges then the spar then
this

angle. There is also a little block that goes inside the angle and has
two
of the four hinge bolts through it, presumably so that the bolt heads
don't
interfere with the radius on the inside of the angle. It would be nice
if
the pictures and drawings showed all the parts!

Stabilizer Mod

I haven't seen MAMs mod but I had made my tip ribs from ,040 with a
doulbe wide flange and second row of rivets.
I wonder if I need bother with this mod? Or maybe at most tie into the
stringers?

Not really sure what angle and block you're talking about... originally the
flange on the tip rib was all there was, now they're using the stainless
piece with the flange, and a tip rib with no flange.

Looks pretty solid, but then the stainless fix that ended up as the
"official" mod feels rock solid. With one end of my stab done, and the
other end original, it was amazing how much more flex and give there was on
the original end. The modded end is rock solid. Of course, I did get a
little carried away with the angle tying the stringers into it all for the
sea fins.
