As a new builder to your group I see some things that are easly answered.
No I am not thorwing rocks but as a techinocal counslor for EAA I recomend
that you buy a realy handy referance book, I know who want's to read books?
U.S. FAA, publication, "Titled AC 43.13-1B/2A Aircraft Inspections Repair
& Alterations" about $20 US. This can be bougt from most aircraft
suppliers. Or the address below which will be slow.
For tiedowns check out Chapter 12.
For plumbing see Chapter 2 Paragraph 8
For wiring see Chapter 11.
There are three other books Which cover almost all the questions, however I
don't have there AC numbers here, I will post them later, or if some one
want's them sooner send me an e-mail at greyghost@powernet.net

The books are for sale by the "Superintendent of Documents
U.S. Government Printing Office
Washington, DC 20402

Ref AC 43.13 Aircraft Inspection and Repair. All Canadian builders, as part
of our "during process aircraft inspections" , must be able to prove to the
inspector at "pre-close" that they have access to this technical
reference!!!!!!! So if you don't have one start looking for someone that
lives close to you that does, before it's a snag on your inspections.

A lot of builders asked about tiedowns I my self looked at the options and
found very few suitable choices. So I went cheap and light. I took 1 1/2 X 1
1/2 x 1/4 aluminum angle drilled two holes in one side to match the two
bottom bolts on the top of the wing strut rounded all corners and got longer
bolts for the wing strut. drilled a 3/8 hole for my tiedown. cobbled a hole
in the wing strut fairing and made a round patch with the right size hole to
cover the aluminum angle. and used NUTSERTS to attach it for easy removal.

Doug, everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I for one don`t want to buy
another book or spend anymore time sifting through them. I joined the
builders list to pick the brains of people just like you so I could save
valuable time and money by hopefully doing things right the first time based
on all the collective years of experience you have.
To date this has been invaluable and I certainly hope it will continue for
people like me and others to come, who are just getting into the sport
without technical or mechanical skills.

Tahnks, Aurele

Interesting. I ordered the ones from MAM but I would not have even known they
were available if Bob hadn't mentioned it. (about $12.cdn each) They look to be
a ring welded on the end of a piece of threaded rod. Either plated or stainless
steel. The threaded part is long enough to go all the way through the wing
strut. Not as strong looking as a certified forged ring but presumably adequate
and easy to install. I don't think I'm comfortable replacing one of the upper
strut fitting bolts with this tie down bolt (nor do I know if it is permissable)
so I may drill an extra hole.

All, Know that we have switched to tie downs for the aircraft itself from
the luggage compartment tiedowns, the cleanest installation is the use of a
forged stainless steel D-ring (this is like a lifting ring but is an
elongated D shape with a female thread on the flat side). The D-ring shape
brings the ring out far enough that when the streamline style aluminum strut
fairing is used, the ring protrudes enough to get the rope through. Simply
replace the 2nd bolt down from the wing(you can't do this with the wing on
as not enough room) with a well dipped(in chromate) stainless bolt to match
the 1/4 X 20 thread on the S.S. D-ring.They don't seem to come with the
finer 428 thread. Can not remember who's product they where, but purchased
thru F.K. Machinery in Barrie, Ontario. They are probably either a Spaenaur
Product or a Brafasco product as these are two of F.K's main lines. I
believe they where around $6cdn each. As for the welded up ones purchased
from Murphy, they have obviously made them to replace the same bolt I am
mentioning here and feel they are strong enough for the job.(also you don't
really think you need all 5 AN4 bolts to hold the wing on do you? Many
flying with only 4 bolts in each because they read the instructons wrong!)
Holster that drill, as another hole thru the strut block will compromise the
structural integrity of the part. Wayne
