I have talked to Bob a couple of times about the engine that is in the REbel
that I am buying.

This one is a 0-320-E2A. I am wondering what most of you guys have put in
yours?

Also, what all can I do to lighten the load out front?

I have an old style conical mount 150 hp 0320, with the carb in
the centre and rear of the oil sump. Not sure of the original
suffix number, but something like an A1A, except I converted it
to fixed pitch. I have the old Bendix mags. At 375 hours,
everything still working good. I recently rotated my plugs and
noted that the gaps are getting a little oblong, so will need to
adjust them soon. I have the steel cyl barrels which were bored
oversize at the last overhaul.

To keep it light I used a Skytec starter and a small Nippon Denso
alternator from a Chevy Sprint.

Not sure if you were going on floats or not, but on wheels,
should be able to use a lighter wood or composite prop. I liked
my old Warp Drive, but they did have the aluminum collar cracking
on some at the root of the blades. Never happened on mine, so not
exactly sure why some have it, and others do not.

I use a light 13 pound Odyssey PC625 battery mounted ahead of the
firewall.

Also have my firewall cut back 3 inches, which should save a few
pounds, too.

I use an 0320 E2D, with light starter and alternator. and a metal Sensenich. I would, next time, consider a Prince prop or other composite for weight, even on floats.

Thanks Walter for the feedback. My firewall is 3" back as well. Although I
understand the reasoning, I don't have the desire to ever go to a smaller
engine, so I don't mind buying the airplane this way. I think it also gives
me the advantage of possibly mounting the Battery up front so that I can
otherwise avoid the possibility of a missle coming at me during a frontal
impact of the airplane. I may end up looking at an alternate composite
propeller to balance out the weight with the battery up front. I also have a

Hi Jim !

You still will have C of G problems putting the battery on the
firewall, unless you use a light battery like Walter's, or even a
small motorcycle battery.

If you can return or sell that new Sensenich, and order a
Prince composite prop, you'll likely save yourself about $400,
AND about 30 lb on the nose ! They work great !

As for the fuel pump - get rid of it ! It will likely cause
more problems than it might ever cure, and, whether it is hooked
up or not, it is using up horsepower, and adding wear (metal !)
to the engine ! If you look back in the archives, you'll see some
comments on problems with the fuel flow with low tanks, which
would be greatly aggravated by having a pump !

I would be careful about using a fuel pump with a gravity feed fuel system. We've discussed this before on the list, and how you plumb and position your selector/shut-off valves is very critical.

Dale, I got the weight off the Sensenich website, and never actually weighed mine, but they are certainly not light. The 37 pounds might include the spacer, not sure.

Would lke to hear more about the Prince and its performance. Sounds good, and 5 lbs is extremely light if that is what it is.

Lightweight starter, nippondenso alternator, and a composite prop are the
biggies. You can also save weight on your exhaust, electronic ignotion
instead of mags and use an aluminum cowl.

My 0320 uses a mechanical pump and an electric back up because I have an Ellison Throttle Body carb and Ellison says it it necessary for fuel preasure. All though I didn't like the complexity and weightI have never experienced a problem with it.

relative efficiency?

if you were buying a Prince-- which length and pitch would you order with a
160 hp engine?

I am seriously considering the Prince prop that isbeing used on the Ultimate
Rebel. You're right, the weight savings is a good thing and I would like to
mount my battery on the firewall after I add some of the mods to the
firewall. Even if I save 18-20 pounds, that is 3+ gallons of gas!

For any of you guys that are using the Prince lightweight prop, what is your
idle like?

I wonder if anyone has put together a comparison of how much you actually
save with different options. FOr example, lightweight starter over a
standard starter, save 4 lbs, Prince prop over the Sensenig prop, 25 lbs,
etc??
