Wings over Canada trip

There were only 3 planes this year, John Lovelace (Wings Over
Canada host and producer) with his 185 on his new amphibs, Dennis
Popowich (from the BCFA), and my Rebel with the 1800 amphibs. We
missed not having Robin or anyone from MAM this year, but I did
my best to represent the Murphy Aircraft and homebuilts for the
show.

There was another host lady (Lisa) that came along with John that
does a couple of other car shows, called Driver's Seat and Engine
Driven. She interviewed me about building the Rebel and the
Lycoming aircraft engine I was using. It was kind of weird
actually, trying to relate to someone who knows almost nothing
about airplanes, and your audience will be mostly non-pilots. And
I had a little trouble trying to make my mags, low compression
0320 sound like a high performance engine.

The Wings Over Canada episode that John and his crew were
shooting will be #3 in this year's series. So it should be
showing some time in October or November. Don't know what will
be in it, but should have some more shots of my plane again.

The trip itself and the flying, as always was fabulous. The
weather, this time, was perfect, so no ducking under low
clouds/fog, or sneaking through holes to get on top. A storm had
passed through the night before, and they were still predicting
strong winds, but by the time we flew in, and got there, it was
totally calm.

The salmon runs were late this year, and the coho were just
starting to come into the bay. They weren't running up the creek
yet, so no netting for the hatchery. I brought along a little 2
place inflatable canoe, that worked out very well for casting and
trolling with my little non-salmon spin cast (Canadian Tire Zepco
404 $5 special). I did bring in 3 coho (about 5 others got away)
into the canoe, with no net, just a very firm grip on the tail,
when I had them tired out enough. My biggest challenge, though,
was getting the hook out of the flopping/thrashing coho, before
my canoe got punctured.

We did a side trip up to the head of big inlet, but couldn't land
there. There was a strong outflow coming down from the Coast
Mountains (highest mountains in BC), and the winds were
absolutely fierce there. Did a couple circles over the area, and
got the heck out of there, as we were really getting tossed
around. It's amazing how the winds can be calm everywhere, except
at these low entrances going into the mountains.

We saw a big school of dolphins, and I think John got some great
close-ups of these, which should be on the show. There was also a
big grey whale hanging around just outside of Pierre's Bay. He
surfaced one time just 20 feet in front of my plane as I was
taxiing. John's boat crew was filming me just then, too, but not
sure if they caught it.

Food and company was great as always, and just a great, relaxing
weekend of flying and fishing. Hope you can make it next year,
Al. Supposed to be a big return year for the coho.

Walter
