I will be talking to the fella who is selling his Rebel this weekend. I am
trying to work out how I can pay for the aircraft. Then it is clean out the
garage so that I can work on it through the Fall, Winter and into Spring.

I put up some pictures of the aircraft so that you guys could see it. Theya
re in file area 222, R-Miscellaneous. If you see anything out of wack,
please let me know.

In the mean time, I will be getting some time in that Champ!

I took a fast look at the pictures. Looks good but the Rebel guys will know
more.
I did notice the wires going through the firewall only have a rubber
grommet. He may have just not gotten to putting on some split stainless
grommets or just some fireproof goo yet. Sometimes this slips past
inspectors because I have seen numerous flying homebuilt with holes through
the firewall with no fire protection.

The work shown in the pictures looks as if a great deal of attention was
paid to the detail and done very well. However, I note one thing. With an
O-320 you should install the Wayne O'Shea's firewall reinforcing plates
(http://www.irishfield.on.ca/products.htm) and I would suspect that the tail
cone mod has not been installed either. You would also have to check on a
Mod by Murphy where it is recommended to beef up the rudder support with a
doubler. I purchased a Rebel in similar condition and have had to review all
work done by getting a listing of all the suggested mods people have made
and then go thru the manual with the mods inserted to insure that the
critical mods have been incorporated. Took me about a month.
The three mods recommended above were not on my plane as the two fellows
were very involved in getting the job done to perfection and did not look at
field results.
So far I have had a lot of fun and believe that the Rebel will be a
"perfect" plane for my situation. It is well built and supposedly flies just
as well.

Jim,

I enjoyed the pictures. I read these notes only because I'm thinking of
building a Moose someday (I fly on the lakes of Northern Maine, and it seems
like the bird for the task!). I'm a long time R/C Modeler, and I got a kick
out of seeing the RC model on the floor under the Rebel! I would imagine
that lots of home builders were, or are modelers. One thing seeing these
pictures reminded me of, is what an incredibly huge project building a plane
is - 90% complete, and 90% to go!

I'm sure you will have fun completing this project! All the best!

Thanks for the suggestions Gary. He has done one of the tail mode, but the
wrap/doubler will have to be done by me as well as the forewall
modifications. He was pretty good about logging everything he did, so it
will be easier for me to go back and see what hidden things, (if any) have
not been done.

Jim,

In looking at your pictures I don't think the 'float mod' from Murphy
has been done to the upper door post corner and the additional row of
rivets down the door posts also doesn't look like it's been done.

I'm sure they can be added without too much trouble.

certified me on floats on Moosehead (He the owner of the legendary DC3 on
amphibious floats). I drove through Monson this past Monday - sadly enough;
I would rather have been flying! I fly mostly with a friend on the lake now
in a PA-12.

I look at those grommets as a lot less dangerous than that 2" hole that we
all (except the water heater guys) cut thru the firewall for your cabin
heat!! Yes a stainless fireplate over top would be nice, but in reality
don't see it critcal (and yes...I've had smoke in the cockpit...but that was
just a darn old C182!)

I did notice the wires going through the firewall only have a rubber
grommet. He may have just not gotten to putting on some split stainless
grommets or just some fireproof goo yet. Sometimes this slips past
inspectors because I have seen numerous flying homebuilt with holes

through

the firewall with no fire protection.

I will be talking to the fella who is selling his Rebel this weekend. I

trying to work out how I can pay for the aircraft. Then it is clean out

garage so that I can work on it through the Fall, Winter and into Spring.
