Rebel engine options

Actually, Ben, the reason some are looking hard at the XP-360 - type
clones is that they are LESS expensive than some rebuilt O-320's !
At least, in this area .... Also, the Superior cylinders are much better
than the Lyc's - more meat in the exhaust valve area, and better flow -
all in all, a better engine, and BRAND-NEW, for less money !
(assuming you don't go wild with the extras - I'm with you, one LSE
would likely give most advantages, with least cost - plus the safety
of flying home on the mag if the battery dies. ;-) )

Radials look romantic, but they have their eccentricities, too ! ;-)
(Don't forget to pull it through 10 blades before starting ... )
Will be interesting to see the real weight, power, and accessories.

Of course, I'm still a BIG fan of the Rotax 912 - my next Rebel
will be a 912-S ...... I'm even thinking about selling the complete
FWF from this one & replacing it with a 912-S .... should have some
money left over, and better fuel economy, for giving up 8 mph of
cruise - think I can live with that ! ;-) :-)

and still have some coins in the bottom of my piggy bank (for gas! :) ). I
forget the particulars on LSE ignition -- there is single side and full dual
-
- but the single side gets most of the benefit (weight, fuel, power) and is
~$1k+ (?) cheaper than the full dual LSE.

Then too that R-263 even if "just" 125hp, but with its predicted very low
weight makes me weak in the knees. Too bad with 5 cylinders it can't use
off
the shelf electronic ignition.

Like you say Bob, nice to enjoy fussing over engine selection after all the
fuss to pick out the airplane.

Hi Bill !

It is indeed possible to put an XP-360 or similar, with lightweight
accessories - like custom carbon-fiber intake manifold, dual electronic
ignition, lightweight starter & alternator(s), polished, ported, and
balanced,
with a lightweight Prince, carbon-fiber coated, wood prop, custom 4 door
cowl,
... and a "glass panel" - into a Rebel !

At this point, there is NO problem with C of G being too forward -
in fact, on paper, this IO-360 is lighter than my O-320, FWF ! And
should develop something like 195 hp ... :-)

I'll have more to say in a few weeks, when the paperwork comes
through, and I can fly this beast ! :-) Should be VERY exciting !

<IF> this works out, it could well become the new standard setup for
"the ultimate floatplane" ! :-)

The really nice thing about the Rebel is - you don't have to decide
on an engine until you're almost ready to fly ! You could build it with
an economical, inexpensive, reliable engine like the Rotax 912, fly for
a few years, then upgrade to an O-360 later, if you decide you want/need
it !
Several people at Oshkosh wanted to do the opposite, so, later, they could
fit into the Sport Class if medical problems appeared....

Either way, it's a great airplane ! :-)

Thanks a bunch, guys, for your advice about Rebel vs. Elite, spring gear
vs. non-, and Murphy vs. RV. There's lots for me to chew about.

So is it indeed possible to put one of the "lightweight" O-360 clones on
a Rebel, or is that just a bad idea & I should stick to an O-320 if I
want to run amphibs one day?

Bill

What's happening to the plans for the floats? Probably have a pair here
you might like to have?
