Basic Moose Tail Kit Question

Post by Scott Aldrich » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:51 am

Like Ken said not down the rib but of course the rib to spar holes are pre
punched. Drawing the line with the black marker per the instruction works
out well. No need to use rulers to mark the line. Just holding the marking
in the center and moving your hand along is more than accurate enough to
keep the rib lined up for the first holes. Sometimes you have to get
something to push a rib around to find the black line then you can pinch the
skin to keep it there while getting a #40 hole in.
Okay you probably new all that anyway.
Take care,
Scott

Subject: Basic Moose Tail Kit Question

Does the Moose have pre-punched skins and ribs in the tail kit, or just
pre-punched skins? I was under the assumption it had both, but the kit I
just received only has prepunched wing skins. Just wondering how you
would build it without jigs if the ribs were not also prepunched.

Thanks,
-Mike

Basic Moose Tail Kit Question

Post by Ken » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:51 am

Hi Mike
No prepunched ribs in any kit that I've seen.
I'm not a Moose builder but when you get started you will realize that
it is not really possible to prepunch the ribs and get everything to
line up. Measurements always vary a bit and things move a bit as you
build. The prepunched skins saves a lot of work and effort for about 99
out of 100 holes if it is like a Rebel. And the rivet lines are nice and
straight and professional looking compared to a Cessna. In some places
the punched holes do align things. A flat table is important.

Basic Moose Tail Kit Question

Post by Mike Kraus » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:51 am

Hi Ken -

Thanks for the response, I just wanted to make sure I was getting the
right parts.

By the way, the Van's RV-10 has pre-punched everything, skin, ribs,
spars, and most all the little pieces parts.... It lines up perfectly
and you can cleco it together right out of the box. It is amazing!

And the tail kit is almost 1/2 price of the Moose.... And the it comes
with the rear tailcone of the airplane from the baggage compartment
back....

Of course there are different types of planes and that is why I am going
to build them both! Of course the wife says I need to finish the -10
before I start the Moose, but at least I have the tail kit waiting...
-Mike
