Hi again

Another question if I may. I have done the 0-320 move the firewall back thing
which also moves the rudder pedals back and therefore the seats. Some guys have
also moved the control columns back 3 inches and used the original CC-5 control
sticks.

It looks to be easier to leave the control sticks (and the control torque tube
assembly) centered on the carry throughs though and I am wondering if anybody
has done this and used the new CC-5-1 control sticks that I think are available
for this exact purpose. If so, are you happy with it? Also is the updated CC-5-1
control stick simply bent more to move the handle 3 inches rearward?

I put a seat in the fuselage for the first time today and it's clear that the
handle on the stick has to move aft in some manner. Will have to sit in it again
tomorrow though as I forgot to make engine noises.... ;)

Haven't seen the new sticks, but have flown Rebels with extended/bent back
sticks. This is an easy, elegant solution ! I agree that leaving the torque
tube where it is designed to be is "a good thing" (TM) :-) - and a LOT
easier !!

There certainly was no problem with control with the re-shaped sticks.
(Do-it-yourself sticks of thin-wall tubing would/could be another matter
entirely !! :-( (Could be a bit wiggly !) )

Bob, Glenn, and Alister thanks for the comments and ideas.

Alister, judging by the torque tube control stops, I can see what you mean by
limited aileron at full aft. (and I like 3 pt. landings and crosswind) Moving
the torque tube to the right a little to center the stick on the seat helps a
little since the stick hits my leg and my knee hits the door. (I could do that
since it looks like my elevator cables are going to be to the right of the
aircraft centerline anyway - I think my cable tabs are backwards to what the
manual shows) Your handgrip bent to the right would accomplish the same thing
though and be more ergonomic.

Moving the torque tube back would also help. It also looks like it would give
more leg clearance from the torque tube and aileron bellcrank in the event that
one slid the seat back to relax in cruise. Not sure if that is really a concern
though and Bob and Glenn are happy with the standard mounting.....

OK keep it centered over the carry throughs to eliminate any conflict with the
seat cushion if a short person flies it. But extend the seat and seat cushion
forward for better thigh support and to raise the leg farther above the torque
tube.

Or just toss a coin....

Hi Ken

I moved my firewall back for the 0-320 installation and found the stick
would be too close to the dash. Purchased the sticks from MAM with the
extra bend (CC-5-1?). Did move the torque tube back but mounted exactly per
plans. That has worked out fine for me. You can see this tomorrow at the
Rebel meeting if you like. You do have to be extra careful when you do the
final Nicopressing for the elevator to make sure that the stick is centered
between the dash and one's belly. No problem for you but I had to be more
careful!

Hi Ken

For info filed out about 1/4 inch of aileron torque tube to allow full travel. Now
works perfectly but control "throws" are in excess of Murphy specifications. I
think I have about 27 degrees of flaperon travel. You should be aware that I
modified my flap system which operates between the seats.

Hi Ken,

I am the same with an 0-320 and the firewall moved back. You are right,
something had to be done to make the driving position OK.

My solution was to make up another control stick that bent 3" further back.
This is OK and I have no big complaints with it, but the stick does tend go
very deep when it is pulled back to the aft position.(made worse by the 3"
bend rearwards)

It is OK to 3 point the aircraft when the wind is on the nose but in
stronger crosswind conditions I find it very difficult to get enough ( if
any!) into wind aileron in to keep things straight and the aircraft right
side up, my legs tend to get in the way because the stick is so deep.

I have found in these type of conditions the only safe way I can land the
aircraft is to use a wheel landing, with the stick forward this gives enough
room to give ample into wind aileron.

I have wondered if I had to do it again wether I would perhaps actually go
to the trouble of positioning the torque tube further aft to position the
stick in a more efficient location.

Just another thing, when I made up the new sticks I bent the handgrips about
15 degrees towards the center of the cabin, makes it very comfortable to
hang onto.

More info to confuse you!!
