Thanks for the pictures Walter

Looks a good turnout of Murphy's.

I went to our annual gathering last weekend at Kemble and only one Maverick
there. Loads of RV's and a good gathering of other types as well. Plenty of
shops and a beer tent though so not all was lost :-)

Bought an external GPS aerial and a second hand transponder so been busy in
the shed today drilling holes. Had a good chat with the diesel engine
people, they've just revised the fuel burns for my engine and we're now down
to about 23 lph in cruise. At our current prices that's about a quarter of
avgas/mogas running costs for a similar HP lycoming.

Sounds good about your engine progress, Nigel. Hope it turns out
as you hoped.

I should also mention that I met Steve Sloan again out at
Arlington. He isn't on the list right while he is moving into a
new house and getting his computer hooked up again. But he wanted
me to say hello for him, to the builders' group here.

For those who might not remember him, Steve was on the list a lot
a few years ago, when he was speed testing his Rebel, and after
he put it on amphibs. He still has the fastest Rebel on wheels
that I know, and now the fastest Rebel on amphibs. And that is
all with a Cont IO240. And I'm sure he's got the lightest amphib
Rebel of anyone, too. Goes to show what keeping your weight in
check and some fairing work will do.

I note on your amphib Rebel the very large exhaust duct on the bottom of the
cowling. I am in the final stages of fitting my cowling on my Rebel with a
O-320 (160 hp) engine so I have to ask. Did you have cooling problems
initially? My exhaust area is nowhere as large as that on your plane appears
to be. Would you care to explain why the need for such a large area?

Thanking you in advance. Sure hope that I do not have to rework the cowling
some more.

Drew, you need to get one of those new 0360 clone engines. I had
a good look at some when at Arlington, and they looked very
tempting indeed. The Mattituck guy there, Mahlon Russel, told me
that their 0360's weigh only 7 pounds more (I could probably save
7 pounds by redoing my bottom cowl!) than an 0320 with equivalent
weight accessories, etc. I found that hard to believe, but he
said that you can't go by the Lyc published weights, and he has
weighed them personally to confirm. They cost under 20K US, brand
new, and with many improvements over the certified versions. And
if our Canuck buck ever gets close to par again...

Steve Sloans Rebel is a 1400 lb. gross weight Rebel. One reason he is so light. He did a realy nice job...I saw his plane in person two years ago at Arlington. He also cut is struts down so his Rebel Amphib has a lower stance and lost even more weight and drag.

I still have a week or two before my engine comes back, and have decided to
enlarge my cowl openings thanks to your Arlington photo. Any tips would be
appreciated. For example, I imagine you glass over the junction of the top
lip where it joins the area behind the spinner inside the cowl before you
cut the old part out. Do you apply the entire new top, then cut the old one
out from the inside? How far aft does the raised top go? There appears to
be a slight discontiuity in the curvature about 12" behind the spinner. Did
you use that as a starting point?

myself. My hangar neighbour couldn't stand to see me butcher up
more fibreglass after what he saw me do to the bottom, so he very
kindly offered to do it for me. Of course I couldn't refuse. But
I didn't actually watch him do it. I know the top lips are
rounded up inside for less turbulence. The parts that were redone
and old pieces cut out were up to about 15 or so inches back.
Hard to tell actually, because he did such a good job, you can't
even tell what is original and what is new. Maybe some more
pictures would help if you want. I do like it, though, and while
still sexy, it has a slightly more aggressive look to it. What
more can I tell you!?

I too would like some more pictures of your cowl as the results
of my initial engine test should be completed in 3/4 weeks and
I suspect that I too will have to do some cowl modifications.

For those asking for more pictures, will take some when I get a
chance, but might not be for a week or so. My son is getting
married this weekend, so am busy with lots of relatives and
out-of-towners right now.

Took my brother-in-law from Manitoba up today for my first trip
of the season into Phantom Lake. He was definitely impressed.
Will post some more pics from that trip as well, when I get a
chance.

First, I have to confess. I didn't do the top cowl

inlet openings

myself. My hangar neighbour couldn't stand to see me

butcher up

more fibreglass after what he saw me do to the

bottom, so he very

kindly offered to do it for me. Of course I couldn't

refuse. But

I didn't actually watch him do it. I know the top lips are
rounded up inside for less turbulence. The parts

that were redone

and old pieces cut out were up to about 15 or so inches back.
Hard to tell actually, because he did such a good

job, you can't

even tell what is original and what is new. Maybe some more
pictures would help if you want. I do like it,

though, and while

still sexy, it has a slightly more aggressive look

to it. What

more can I tell you!?
